I suspect you could well be right, if the nozzle isn't properly engaged onto the nipple then you won't be able to pump grease in.
But having said that, I wouldn't worry. The top nipple is pretty much redundant. I only ever grease the lower nipples and have never had a problem. Some people like to pump heavy oil into the top, but I've never really seen the need.

Don't know if this will help but worth a try. Whenever I get grease coming out as you describe I stop, remove the gun and press the ball bearing in the middle of the nipple with a big needle. You can feel it spring loaded when it's free. All started when I had a seized one once. Also, you are turning the wheels full lock to gain acces? Nick

There is just an outside possibility that the grease nipple thread may be impacting the top of the king pin and blocking the grease physically from entering, causing the 'blowback'.
It may be worth unscrewing it, putting a suitable washer underneath and tightening up before trying again..

I had the same experience with grease oozing on top nipples until I realised that you need to hold the flexi near the nipple so that it is directly in line with the ball bearing entry point. This is why I use a trigger type grease gun (purchased from Williams) so that one hand can hold the flexi and the other can pump the grease.

Cracking advice chaps as usual and very much appreciated. I will experiment with the advice given, especially the position of the nipple. As an aside, the comment about not worrying too much about greasing the top nipples, it's not the first time I've heard that said to me in my short time of Morgan ownership. Are the bottom greasing points more important than the top? I'd like to think so after today's battle

Absolutely no question about it. The lower grease nipple lead directly into the gap between the upper and lower bronze bushes. The top nipple feeds a hole which bleeds out above the top bush. Pretty much all the wear happens on the lower bush, not the upper. Regular greasing of the lower nipple is an absolute must.

Indeed it was, it filled like a beauty yanking back slowly on that chain with no mess or grief whatsoever. I put the dispensing head back on and released the lower control valve and it bled perfectly.
It is even easier than that. The piston that pushes the grease is free floating, another plunger pushes against it under spring pressure but isn't fixed to it, so pulling back the chain doesn't create a vacuum. Just pull back the chain and lock it and push the cylinder into the grease, the floating piston will be forced back up the tube. Thanks for reminding me to get one of these excellent devices.

One thing I forgot to mention regarding Wanner grease guns. When you have finished using them, pull the chain back and hook it into the slot on the base of the barrel. The free-floating piston stays where it is so you don't get air pockets developing
This releases the pressure on the seals and prevents leaks.

Unfortunately the photos of kennyh are no longer visible.
What is the best way to fill a Wanner grease gun with grease?
The first time I did it with a spatula. That worked (unfortunately some air came along too), but it was a bit tiring.
How do you do that?
