On the 1999 Zetec in the 4/4 there is a charcoal canister which absorbs petrol vapours from the tank and then releases them into the inlet manifold under the control of an ECU operated solenoid under certain predetermined engine operating conditions. I suspect all "newer" models have some variation on this theme to meet emissions regulations.

My question is how do you get round this when changing to throttle bodies and aftermarket ECU's as there is no plenum manifold to take the vapours and, as I understand it, aftermarket ECU's such as the Omex 600 don't support EVAP solenoid control.

Any ideas or advice please.

On my 4/4 the original ford ecu is retained to look after the fuel pump and evaps. The Omex looks after fueling and ignition. Could remove the ford ecu, but then the security would be reduced, and evaps would have to be resolved. Can't help with the vapours as I have a turbo and retain the inlet manifold

Thanks Mike,

I was hoping to run with a single ECU.
I can get round the security problem with a separate immobiliser and fob ( or just not bother ) but the EVAP is foxing me.
The fuel pump will run from the Omex.
I've got a feeling that many just disconnect the EVAP and let the filter vent to air but I'm not sure.
Turbo would be a fun way to go. Did you do that on the 4/4 with the Zetec.
Bit wild for me but I'm still interested how you did it.

It's an eco thing - cars ran for decades with venting only to the atmosphere. Simplest to do just that

Might be sense to check the MoT issue

From what I remember the charcoal collects petrol vapour for feeding back in to prevent venting to air. An eco solution.
Your ecu may generate a fault code if it is removed. On my Rover V8 with Gems ecu I did get an evap error code once, possibly due to overfilling the petrol tank. Reset with my Maxiscan and not come up since, I dont fill up to the "last drop".
You could try disconnecting it to see what happens. A solenoid valve is part of the set up and you may be able to bypass signals for this?

The 4/4 runs a 1 inch turbo with around 14 psi boost. Boost comes in at 3,000 rpm. Based on the result from two rolling roads the power output is measured the same at 195 hp. However it has taken me two years to get the mapping as I want it. It is not only power delivery but also needs to be well mannered in all sorts of driving conditions. Simply placed on a rolling road you may get a mapping suitable for the track, but not necessarily suitable for the road. Fortunately Omex were extremely helpful, and I found a few good ideas in some books about ecu tuning.

On the subject of evaps, I found little info on zetec evaps, so I purchased a second hand valve so I could work out what it does. Basically if there is a vacuum at the manifold, and a signal from the ecu, then it will allow vapor out of the filter and into the manifold. It may be that the ecu works in the same way as that on my +8, once the engine is up to temperature, the ecu signals the valve to open. There may also be a condition in the ecu on engine speed ( my memory isn't much good )

I am sure it would be possible to retain the evaps and build a simple box to enable evaps based on engine temperature, the valve takes care of the requirement for there to be a vacuum in the manifold. The omex ecu does have programmable outputs, I would have to check the manual to see if it could enable an output based on engine temperature.

With some work I have done on the +8, and the various issues (nightmares) I had with the 4/4 mapping, I am not sure that these modifications are for the faint hearted. It needs a certain grim determination (or stubbornness) to succeed.

What you have written suggests that the ecu responds to engine conditions and permits something ie the opening of the solenoid valve. It doesnt sound like a case of the ECU checking a sensor linked to the fuel tank or fuel lines ie reacting to a feedback and adjusting accordingly. If that is the case then I cant see any problem in simply disconnecting the system other than you may need to convince the ECU that the valve is still connected ie put a resistance in circuit.

Why not simply disconnect the valve and see what happens?

I think you would also need to remove the charcoal canister as when the valve opens it lowers the pressure due to the vacuum of the inlet & that flashes the fuel off the charcoal.
