That's a great suggestion Andre. I particularly like the fact that it picks out 'the best route with the most curves'!

After intensive comparison I bought a TomTom GO 5100 two years ago (successor TomTom GO 5200) and still very satisfied with it. Advantages: - lifetime updates included (worldwide maps, speed cameras)
- live traffic information worldwide (with built in SIM card with no running costs)
- planning of routes or selection of destinations on desktop or mobile device and sending to device prior to entering the car (very useful!)
Is working in MOG's and GB as well - both tested ;-)

Speaking of navigators: I am very pee'd off with Jaguar Land Rover at the moment. First I discovered that the optional €840 navigator does not have any option for speed cameras, despite there being a speed camera folder on the SD card. It must have been an intentional decision to block this feature to differentiate it from their premium navigator which comes with the larger screen at much more money.
Ok I thought, I really want speed cameras so I will run Sygic on the system from my phone. Mistake!! I should have ordered something called In Control Apps at a cost of €530 (I had thought that this was specific Jaguar apps, not simply so you could connect apps on your phone). Alright I said turn the feature on for me. No, that is not possible. It can only be installed at the factory when the car is in construction!!
I then discovered that the Navigator, In Control Apps, and a few other things come standard in all the UK models but have been made optional extras on the European models which already cost more in the first place. In fact to spec my car to be the same as delivered standard in the UK I would be up for at least 15% more in the cost of the car. One prospective owner in Malta, having discovered this, is seriously thinking of buying in the UK and privately importing the car.
This really is a stupid management and marketing decision on the part of JLR. These days little tin boxes come fully equiped from the connected point of view, let alone premium brands. The model of BMW that I was considering comes with all this as standard for about the same price as the Jaguar.
To me this sort of behaviour on the part of a company is morally objectionable and bordering on dishonest.

TomTom here but look for one with 1) Built in WiFi - that way you don't need to plug it into a computer for updates - my only real problem was caused by a configuration issue in a new computer. 2) Enough memory or a slot for an additional memory card - Europe Wide maps and a few extra features soon fill up the built in memory on some models 3) Free for life map updates 4) Free for life traffic information (Saved our bacon several times when in areas we did not know and could have been caught in severe delays)
I have made a mount that hangs from the tonneau cover peg on the dashboard - keeps the windscreen clear. There are lots of examples around.

It may also be laziness for JLR to have a single Europe-spec nav system which is compliant in all Non-UK European countries including those such as France where I believe it is not permitted to use a device which gives warnings of speed camera locations. 'Upgrades' are then sold (at extra profit) in markets where speed camera warning devices are permitted.

Thank you gentlemen for your kind suggestions. I'm currently 'googling' all the versions you suggested for further information and prices. Also that's bad news Peter, all the versions I've checked have 'speed camera' warnings as standard (even the smartphone apps), JLR are being cheapskates.
Have a great weekend Paul

Gambalanga car companies charge what they think they can get away with for electronic gizmos & it has no relation to install cost. Apple uses the same thinking. I can buy a Garmin or Tomtom satnav with lifetime maps & digital traffic avoidance for £150. Map updates will be several times a year. To get it built in can be £700 or much more & map updates may be annual or less for £250 plus. An AA map book is £5 but its a bit difficult to manage in an M3W.

Tim. I am not so upset that I had to pay for it. I am upset that the same model of car in the UK comes with it fitted as standard. They have succumbed a little to owner pressure and have made the most recent map update free of charge.
This alone goes to show the value of forums. Given that most of these things are just software that JLR has already paid for it is a bit taking the p*ss that non Uk customers have to pay extra but even more anoying that the software can not be updated to provide the missing services. I can't believe that they have so many different in car entertainment systems on the shelf. They must be essentially the same and just be programed when the car is built, so why can't it be upgraded at the dealer, post delivery??? VW can do it so why not JLR. Further more these days VW comes with App Connect as standard or as a no cost option on promotion!
