I've tried a few and you have to take most sellers blurb with a pinch of salt.
I'm sure some of these units will start a 900cc Corsa but the bigger stuff soon defeats them. When my 4/4 expired with a completely flat battery recently a friend got it started with a pack that he'd picked up for £40 in Lidl. It was about the size of a USB hub and was only half charged itself yet it put enough oomph into my battery for it to start itself the next time. I was very impressed, I'm just waiting to see one that cheap. ~iw Ian, I got this on e bay. I was thinking of buying one, and then my neighbour bought one, so I didn't bother. (He's retired, so is usually at home, and he's extremely obliging in such matters).
The one he has is just a Norauto one (french equivalent of Halfords) It also does fast charge and on the two occasions I've borrowed it to jump a car (once to help a member of staff, the other time a customer) it did the trick perfectly.

Bought a T3 Floureon peak current 600A for a Spanish trip in the Aero last year because of troublesome starter motor (not required). In this last week have had charging problem on my 3.0D X5 and the Floureon has started it several times with the battery dead.
Also has a very handy light and can be used to charge mobile phones, laptops,etc.

This past Winter in Rhode Island, the 2009 Jeep Rubicon with V-6 engine I was lent had its battery commit suicide. A call to the owner told me to find the Li-Ion battery pack somewhere in the garage and use that to jump start the Jeep across the battery terminals. About the size of a large, thick, mobile phone, I was skeptical. The cold engine started right up. The specifications on the label read 8,000 milliamps. I have shopped battery packs in similar sizes (eBay and Amazon) to 10, 12, 16,000 milliamp ratings. They usually come with attachments to charge mobile phones, laptops, ipads et al.

I have no technical knowledge of these but I'm sure I remember Hamwich saying how good they were - maybe worth a pm. I bought a 13600mAH job from Amazon a couple of years ago, it cost around £55 back then. Truly excellent bit of kit. It will start a 2.2 litre diesel 3 or 4 times before needing to be recharged. You can use it as a power source for laptops, mobile phones and so on. Mine doesn't seem to be available any more but this one has got a higher capacity for less money. My recommendation would be to go for the biggest AH capacity you can afford. They really aren't very big, mine's about the size of a paperback book. Even in its zipped case it will fit easily into an odd corner of the car.
