I'm at about 500 miles on my 2017 M3W, so my engine rpm is limited to 5100. No problem if I slowly accelerate to that limit but the rev limiter kicks in at around 4500 if done quickly. Is it possible that the engine is really getting to 5100 before the tach needle catches up or is there really a problem (ECU)?
Thanks.
John

My 2017 does the same thing - hard acceleration and it stutters at ~4500. I'm at about 350 miles so far, and my expectation was that the limiter should be off by now. When I asked the dealer, she told me I should be finished with the rev limiter by 300 miles.

From what I've heard it's the number of running hours, which is twenty, that will turn off the lower rev limit. I guess if we both have the exact same issue this is a break-in "feature" and not an actual issue. 😏

Hmmm, probably right. As a guess, I've probably been averaging ~40mph overall, so I may have ~10 hours on it so far.

I did, which is why I'm confused. My manual states "...the ECU will automatically limit engine RPM in 2 stages during the first 20 hours of engine operation. During the first two hours, the rev limiter is 4250 RPM. from 2 to 20 hours of engine operation the rev limiter is 5125. After 20 hours, the rev limiter is 5800." I'm certainly over 2 hours, but the rev limiter seems to be kicking in at anything over ~4300. I'm not up to 20 hours yet I suspect. Not a big deal, and I'll wait until I get closer to 1000 miles on it to see what happens. Is it a progressive limiter, or does it just shut down at the limit?

My business car spends reasonable amount of its life being thrashed up and down motorways, regulalry in excess of 70mph, and yet over 4 years and 40k miles the average speed is not much over 32mph according to the computer. To average 40mph you'll need to be doing 80mph for the same aamount of time you are stationary. Not impossible, of course!

My 2016 GMC Terrain for over one year of driving back and forth to work and weekends etc it right around 46 mph the last time I looked at the computer setting. Oh, in that year I clocked of 20k miles, so it hit the road hard too. So it's possible to be in the 40's without much of a problem.
