Dave my axle appears to have moved forward on the drivers side by about 1cm compared to the other side. Is this physically possible and if so how do I move it back ?

Keith.
The axle has a round female locator on each side which fits a male spigot on the top of the spring. So the position is not adjustable.
So are you sure it hasn't always been like that?
You can see the male spigot on the upper part of the spring in the photos above.
However if the main leaf breaks ahead of the axle, then the axle can move rearwards on that side.
You need to get it inspected, but a slight variation side to side is 'normal'.

Roger, somewhere I've seen a photograph of a long lever which attaches to the front of the spring. It's something I might do "next time". A jack handle and some U bolts might just do it.
I am sure I have seen them use a rudimentary lever at the factory on the rear of the spring having fitted the front end first. Easy with the body off though. This is my sorry attempt at a lever. It was tacked together on the fly from bits out of my scrap box when I was wrestling with the front bolts. It has LH and RH ends. It enabled a 10 stone wimp to do the job single handed. Looks good to Me. I will make one of these up. Not good at welding but do have the scrap.

Thanks Dave, it was MOT'D this week and nothing found. You are probably right maybe i didn't notice it before but there is quite a difference. Going to get Caine to look at it next weekend.

On my 2009 Roadster the rear springs sagged in 2014 wt about 25k km... So you got more out of your springs than I got Jay! But then I am a bit heavier... I got the Mulfab ones istalled and also placed a second anti tramp bar and Avo dampers, was a good improvement. The supplex rear leaf springs came to late, otherwise I would have considered those. Cheers, Bert

Dave - many thanks for re-posting the pictures. I have changed my rear springs now - took me 2 days. I read and re-read your post and it helped enormously - saved me no end of bother. A few things that may help others. One I probably missed in you text was to leave the shackle bolts slightly loose until the spring is fully mounted - on my first attempt, I needed to nudge the spring forwards a tad to get the bolt to line up and my zeal in tightening the rear shackle bolts prevented this. As regard holding the rear of the spring down to insert the shackle bolts, my cable ties must be of a lesser quality than yours, so I used baling string (industrial strength). When it came to fitting the two spacer washers, the outside one was easy enough to lodge on the end of the bolt while I moved the shackle into place. The inner one was a bit more tricky - I came up with the idea of using masking tape to hold on to the spacer and stop it falling into the void below the shackle: Like your springs, mine were well past their best. Here is a picture of the off-side old spring compared to the new ones. Like you, I got 4 leaf, 4 seater springs from Peter at Mulfab. A test drive shows a substantial improvement over a local road that I used to have to keep my speed well down on. Speed bumps no longer create a horrid crashing. Very pleased with the outcome. Thank you again Mr W for your original post. Your G Cramp method worked perfectly.

Glad to help Paul. As you will have found, it's a strenuous job but very satisfying! The ride on Bumble was transformed after doing that job.

GOMOG has directions for R&R rear springs. Item 12 suggests that a helper stands on the spring to position it for taking out the perch bolts. I would suggest one uses a large C clamp for this job. If I can I avoid Helpers. I can't control them.

If I can I avoid Helpers. I can't control them. Me too. G Clamps are much more reliable. was however forced to hold a spanner for the inside rear seat mounting bolts as my arms are 1 foot too short.
