Yes, it's a dry black coating , it's hasn't been abraded at all. It was pretty much like that when I bought it in March this year, here's another pic of a chassis member
You can also see a badly rusted exhaust bracket, which I
I'm de-rusting and painting with Hammerite.
I'm a bit worried that I'll be left with a pile of rust next spring, there can't be many 5 year old cars which need drastic rust treatment.

That's quite unusual on the exhaust bracket. My Roadster brackets are 13 years old and no rust at all.

That's no comfort at all !
The previous owner lived in Kelso so I can only suppose that he parked it on the sea front. Thank god I didn't buy a Fiat

But Kelso is nowhere near the sea.

Kelso, Thurso, it's all the same to Me. I used to live in Peterborough, and could always feel the sand in my food, from the North Sea

The key now is to set your stall out & do achievable areas and start as you mean to go on. The best part is that having discovered things, you can start the positive.

Clean area, jacked up and over a tarp or similar.
White sprit and several stiff brushes.
Go easy with any wire brushes as you don't want to take off any galvanising
Clean one are at a time
Have a box of rags etc handy
Use whatever replacement underseal you opt for (clear would ensure you know which parts you've done if it's days/weeks between starting & completing)
Overalls, glasses or goggles
Patience & a sense of humour
Copious tea breaks and a radio channel of your choice.

Part of the owner/car bonding process thumbs

Steve, that's very calming advice. I'll play R4xtra and listen to a good drama. Or maybe Pink Floyd.

Hello, start of a new thread?

Perhaps not, it must have been done before.
