8:15pm. Unwrap brand new lightweight Leatherman knife (birthday gift from ever-loving 8:20pm. Cut thumb with brand new Leatherman..... Happy Birthday for yesterday! Funny about the knife - we all do it. I remember 'testing' the sharpness of a fishing knife with my thumb and my Dad's words ringing in my ears "brush your thumb lightly across the blade, not along... Oh what have you just done!!"

Since we're drifting into accidental injuries, my finest was when a sharp chisel slipped and went into the base of my thumb. Yes I know. Stupid, very stupid.
I'd never seen such fatty tissue exposed, although surprisingly not much blood. After establishing that I still had full movement (which was a relief), I contemplated my next move. I was home alone in the garage. It was about 4 o'clock on a Saturday. I really didn't fancy driving to A&E and waiting there for hours.
In Westerns they always douse the injury in whisky. So I went inside, has a slug of whisky and spat some into the wound.
Boy did that sting......................................
So I dried it off, put a couple of medical tape splints across the wound and put a plaster over the top. And went back in the garage.
Amazingly after two or three days it was healing well, and the scar is a very fine curved line. You may inspect it on request..........

Do you use Westerns as a guide to any other areas of your life ? A "what would John Wayne do ?" approach.

The Western option can certainly be considered as a get out strategy. Perhaps more Steve McQueen than John Wayne..........
I did use a Stanley blade on a wart-on-a-stalk once. Perhaps thats a story for another day around the campfire.

Giles, that makes two of us who should not be allowed to play with knives. I have a Victorinox "rescue" knife that I use when marshalling. On one of the first outings I managed to cut a finger while checking all was in order. CoC brought a plaster up to the top post at Prescott... Doing woodwork at school and the teacher told us to always be behind the chisel. This was reinforced when I was using the chisel with my right hand and holding the wood with my left and then finding the chisel in the flappy skin between my thumb and forefinger of my left hand. Never did that again.
