The Plus 4GDI has a similar vulnerability to the previous Plus4 Duratec. They both benefit from engine covers.

I see in the other post that you've made up something clever yourself, Dave.

Would there also be something readily available for the more 'technically challenged' people like me?

For instance a ford engine cover that would fit (maybe with some simple adjustment or alterations)?

Or would that lead to risk of overheating?

Thomas, to be honest, I only read about the issue of water around the spark plugs on this forum. I had my dealer, Williams, check the plugs for damage. They checked for me free of charge. There was no evidence of water however I put an engine cover over the engine "just in case".

60Yards, if you have a look in the past threads on here (I know that it is difficult to find stuff) you will see many variants of cover. I used a mondeo cover from a scrapyard plus some new mounting legs from a ford dealer to make up a cover. Used a piece of cardboard to make a template then went to work with a hacksaw. No overheating issues...

This is a big problem on the Ford DOHC engines. You will even find references to it on the Ford Focus forums, and they have an engine cover and no bonnet louvres. Morgan should be providing a solution for this. Caterham supplied a cover for their Ford Duratec engines. It is not perfect but it does help. I used one of these but I had to modify (as in cut) it to clear the supports for the engine coolant pipe that runs above the inlet manifold. If I had known about this before I fitted the throttle bodies I would have replaced the tube with one that runs below the manifold. I also improved the seal to the cam cover by the judicious addition of some self adhesive neoprene.

This is the carbon fibre offering from Caterham but I found one in fibreglass at a much lower price. I think a similar cover was also made by Cosworth.

I didn't realise it was such an issue on mine until I first changed my spark plugs when I first got it

Completely rusted in and according to the service book they had been changed 14 months previously

The previous owner has done 12K miles in a year though

These are my do's as I've yet to fit my new cam cover and spark plug cover

1. John Taylor storm cover on every time it's parked outside and rain is forecast or if parked for a while

2. Always cover the engine with plastic sheeting when washing the car- no matter how careful with water on the bonnet (make sure engine is cold of course to avoid melted plastic)

Haven't tried it but would putting grease or vasiline around the spark plugs help or is that a no no ?

Stewart, when Williams checked my spark plugs, they refitted them with a smear of copper slip around the spark plug thread.
