Very good point, funnily enough I am at my local BMW dealer this week for a service on my other car so if I remember (big if sometimes! laugh2 ) I will ask the question.

I would be very interested in their thought's on trying to start the car with the fuel pump fuse removed, and whether this would cause any problem.

Unfortunately I dropped it off to early and the techs hadn't arrived.

Its going back for some work mid November, so I will make a note and ask then! cheers

So I picked up my BMW from the dealers yesterday and posed the question, the response from the tech was with modern oils there is no need to pre-crank the engine, it will be fine even if left a good 6 months or more.

Unfortunately this doesn't help answer the "how to crank without firing" question, but it does at least provide some reassurance.

Why not just turn the key off when it fires. do it a few times?
