I seem to recall that Bentley and RR leaf springs were "superfinished" by lapping the leaves together, or did I imagine that ?

I'm about to refit the original leaf springs to my Jaguar Special after having them reset. They're much better quality than the new ones I currently have fitted.

I intend to lubricate between the leaves and then wrap in Denso tape.

Lapping was the ultimate solution I believe. Interleaving was common in the sixties. A modern equivalent is available now and Simon (SiFab) sent me the link a while ago.

I have just seen this thread: Prior to setting of for Avignon I had been thinking about a fivelink suspension change but then had the thought that I might try raising rear tyre pressures to 25psi ( Avon shocks, a couple of small bags on board) and the change was remarkable. So there is something that is well worth trying and costs nothing.

I support the car on the rear frame and let the axle dangle when I lube my springs. The theory being that the tension comes off and the leaves open a little to let the lube in.

Adjustable progressive bump stops cured all my rear crashing suspension issues. Best mod ever on my Morgan.

Nick, others may disagree but I see the problem as one of contol, or lack of (assuming you have good quality springs). There is very little room for suspension movement on a trad and this is exasperated by the wide manufacturing tolerances between cars.  Peak suspension movement is not constrained as you would normaly expext on a normal system. Unfortunatly various body contact points are used to constrain the suspension instead. Can't think of too many other suspension systems that work like that!

I have installed a simple device for a few pounds that prevents this. It allows me to precisely control the movement of each spring and then the suspension works very well indeed IMO. I beleave it even improves matters by adding a bit of progressive spring rate at the end of the suspension travel too. You can feel the push back from the stops when you go into a hard corners somtimes. And that feels nice smile

I have posted details before so won't bore again but links to a couple of threads below.

Thanks Roger, I'm going to have a go at your method.
