I'd also heard that story.
I'd do the same: to me they are no more than politically motivated baubles.

Worthers; is your inability to remember down to your youth, or poor memory?

ps very interesting to read Jenson Button's comment about Lewis, in Jenson's recent autobiography.

pps: I really admire all top line F1 and LMC drivers. Anyone that can race a car with their skill and be fit enough to deal with 5G braking forces is a bit of a star in my book.

I would like to state my poor memory, as you suggest, is down to my "youth".
I was not intending to pass comment on a Knighthood just his driving ability.
With regard for John Surtees I had heard the same story and would assume it was accurate and if anyone from motor racing deserved a Knighthood it was him for achieving world championships on both 2 and 4 wheels.
Unfortunately just before my time, as I said "youth". cheers

since 2012 he has travelled as a UNICEF ambassidor to various poor areas of the world and got heavily involved with Soccer Aid

Also according to a charities website he supports these charities

Great Ormaond Street Hospital
Harlem Childrens Zone
The Honeypot Childrens Charity
Education Africa

Hes only 32 of course and still racing and contracted to Mercedes Motorsport and everything that entails from travelling , PR, meeting sponsors etc

Sir Jackie Stewart has been retired from racing a long time and so I'm sure has more time to devote to charity work

Thanks Stewart and Hugo. He’s gone up in my estimation.

Always disappointed that Carl Fogarty only ever got the MBE with 7 World titles to his name.

Cannot help but think and have thought this way since a lad , that the people who deserve them them most are never seen or heard and would probably say "no thank you".

Quite, and we have no idea what question his comment was a response to or whether it was obvious that he was having a laugh about insisting on being called "sir" or if he was deadly serious. A media savvy politician would never have said anything like that but a hyped up racer who has just sealed a world championship could easily be caught out by a journalist trying to get an attention grabbing quote.

There is a very good precedent for him to receive some serious award. A decent number of the olympic athletes were given awards. He is another form of sportsman who has effectively won 4 Olympic golds.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
