Quite, and we have no idea what question his comment was a response to or whether it was obvious that he was having a laugh about insisting on being called "sir" or if he was deadly serious. A media savvy politician would never have said anything like that but a hyped up racer who has just sealed a world championship could easily be caught out by a journalist trying to get an attention grabbing quote.

Precisely.

Here's the Guardian quote in context (my apologies that it took a few days to remember where I'd read it). It's clearly said with warmth. And not a hint of arrogance.

“I have missed the Queen since I had lunch with her when she invited me to the Palace,” he said. “I have always wanted to go back, that would be the greatest honour. I have been trying to represent England the best way I can and if that is at some stage recognised by the Queen I would be incredibly honoured.”

Murray revealed he had reservations about accepting a knighthood because he was worried it would distract him from his ability to perform and that being referred to as Sir might be awkward. Hamilton would be more than happy to embrace it.

“I would enforce it on everyone,” he said with a smile. “Friends, everyone. It is such an honour. I have friends who are Sirs and I call them Sir. It’s unique, why not enjoy it?”"

Will, it's good to have a summary of the article.

Perhaps, we can close this thread and allow those who are happy to acknowledge Lewis Hamilton's achievement to celebrate this remarkable achievement and also allow those who hold a different view of Lewis to remain with their conviction of their alternative view.
