I remember the old Great Noth Road in Hertfordshire,a three lane road rebuilt in the late 20s, one lane in each direction and a central passing lane for either side to use ...

Which caused a lot of fatal head on crashes I imagine. When I was 10 there was a fatal crash on a 3 lane road outside our property.
