The mog is suffering from a touch of the winter flu. Very rough running at certain throttle settings, diagnosed as dirt-in-carby, and so had to be left at the airfield on Tuesday. I removed the carb and took it to an old man (i.e. even older than me) in a matchbox sized garage at the back of a courtyard of a crumbling apartment block in the 2nd district, the old Jewish quarter. Helmut looks like he has been working at his bench since Morgan discovered the fourth wheel. The sign above the street entrance (two doors down from Susi who offers intimate services) just says Vergaser (Carburettor.) Helmut's walls are lined with Solex, Amal, Weber, SU and bits and pieces of every carburettor ever made. There's a small lathe in the corner. "No problem" said Helmut, after I explained the symptoms. This morning I returned and picked up a nice clean Weber for a very reasonable sum. One day Helmut will hang up his overalls and the Vergaser sign will go. And then where will we go?

You could have saved a journey there Kerry. If you'd asked Helmut to work on your carburetor whilst you waited, you could have paid your regards to his neighbours...

There is some hope. Some young guys are interested in such old technologies. Of course they can not share Helmut‘s lifetime experience but they are willing to learn everything about the carbs. Even if you consider younger cars, only a hand full of people in my region are able to make the right settings and diagnosis on K Jetroniks.
A similar case like Helmut’s category is about old electronics. Happily I know an expert in Düsseldorf who repairs, if needed, my old Fender, Leak, Quad and McIntosh amps. He is almost 70 and designed a lot of mobile electronics for Kraftwerk, which I learned a year after I was a happy customer.

Many years ago I knew the Leak family, when Harold Leak sold up he retired to Jersey CI took to his bed and stayed there much to the frustration of his wife and daughter.

Sorry for kidnapping... interesting story about Harold Leak. I have 2 Stereo 20, and at the 16 ohms taps with some good tubes and original carbon resistors of the right value they sound really very good e.g. with horn loaded speakers. They have an unusual high input sensitivity but they make a good match with an older and simple made, but very good sounding Croft preamp which does not boost the signal so much.

Hi Heinz, Have you seen the amazing book "Quad, the closest approach"? By Ken Kessler. A wonderful history of Quad and Peter Walker. So many parallels between him and Peter Morgan..... Nick

I have a copy if you have no luck finding it. Thanks a lot for your Kind offer, Nick. Keep a close eye on your copy! Have a look at the price. I was shocked. https://www.amazon.de/Quad-The-Closest-A...uad+the+closestAnd there are more expensive offers. I guess I will find a pdf download for relatively small money. Some time later...I cannot understand what this Amazon prices are about, if you can find this page. http://www.audioaffair.co.uk/quad-the-closest-approach-book-by-ken-kessler
