A work colleague has the same failure on a 1978 Hillman Hunter, doing about 75 on the old Winchester by-pass. The "dig in" sheared the rear axle off the springs and broke the rear spring mount away from the body, leaving it all in the road. the rest of the car continued for some distance, spraying petrol from the punctured tank.
His next car was front wheel drive...!
