I have come across a data sheet once published by Newnes Motor Repair and Overhauling for the late 1930s 4/4. It has details such as firing order, Solex carb jetting,valve timing, ignition timing, tappet clearances, plug gaps, toe-in of front wheels, tyre and oil pressures, recommended lubes and battery capacity.
Anyone out there need any such info??

I have a 1938 Series 1 4/4. It may be interesting to see what is being spec'd.

Hi Mark B
Firing: 1,3,4,2; Solex choke 30-23, main 115, compensating 210, pilot 60. Valves (set with 6thou clearances) Inlet open 10 BTDC, Close 50 ABDC, Exhaust open 50 BBDC, Close 10 ATDC. Ignition timing: contact points begin to open at TDC (shown for cylinders 1 or 4 when line on flywheel opposite hole in case) . Tappets (cold) inlet .006 inch, exhaust .010 inch. Plug gap .022 - .025; distributor gap .012 - .015; front wheel toe in 1/8 inch max. Oil pressure 40 psi; oil grade 50 in summer and 40 in winter (UK temperatures I guess) Battery 57 ah.
Front tyres 5.00-16 18psi or 4.50-17 21psi.

Some good stuff. Do they indicate which engine. Standard Special or Coventry Climax??

Cheers, Sadly not. There are two columns on the sheet labelled 1939 and 1937-38 but no engine type. Details in both columns are identical! I think the Standard engine was introduced in 1939 but whether it would have same settings as CC engine is debatable?
