I may as well ask this question of the collective.

We are not big TV watchers, but we do like watching TV if the programme is worthy. We have been slow to adapt to modernity. We had a small black and white portable TV from 1978 to 1983. We only bought a colour TV when MissW was born so that she wouldn't think the outside world was black and white.

Our current first generation LCD flat screen TV is about 15 years old, and has quite serious screen burn, which resembles cumulous clouds. I can live with that. It's a 26" Panasonic and cost over £1k when it was new.

But soon to be retired and more time available means time for an upgrade.

I've just negotiated agreement to go for a 49" with SWMBO, and in the end, having illustrated the sizes with sheets of cardboard, it was easier than I expected!

So - what should I be looking for in a 49/50" TV. It seems that 4k is the thing to have plus smartness.......................

And which brand??????

And do I need a DVD player? Do I need a sound bar?

I'm well outside my comfort zone with anything which needs plugging in, unless it's a drill or concrete cutter, or angle grinder...................

Dave i am in your lane on this one, just purchased a 55" LC Smart which more than does the job, i dont need Sky package or any other package that cost a fortune every month, i opted to purchase a Humax box ( legal) it doesnt give much more than the Tele itself but it does allow for recording, @ £160 purchase cost with no on going charges.

Yes LED smart TV, may as well go 4K as well, I think most are. Between my and swmbo's houses we have Panasonic, Sony and Samsung TV's. I would go Samsung every time with no hesitation. Soundbars are great especially if you watch films etc. but not essential Current TV's are very thin so there is not much room in them to provide any depth for the speakers. Do you have or have access to a Costco card? Good prices and a 5 year guarantee included. DVD players are really cheap so may as well have one of them too!

Bought dad a 49 incher just before Crimbo...the thing sits on their very 1970's stone fireplace corner, and looks very precarious...but it's a terrific picture..!!

LED screen, £499 in the Black Friday shizzle from John Lewis as they give a five year guarantee..

No sound bar needed unless you're either very deaf or enjoy the sound quality like a HiFi buff.

Brands are very much of a muchness, all down to preference or looks of the remote..

PS - I love the way you're so accurate about when you bought the B&W one..!

We’re the same as you; don’t watch a great deal of television. We’ve had 3 TVs in 34 years. The last change was about 5 years ago when our old cathode ray tube TV developed a whistle we couldn’t get rid of. Went to John Lewis’ in Brent Cross and they went through everything with us. Advised us to get a big screen (big for us that is - not full-wall sized) which we did and are very grateful for their advice. Bought a Samsung in the end and it’s been excellent. Probably don’t use a 10th of what it can do but the big screen is superb. Didn’t mind paying a lot as it’s here until it goes wrong (which hopefully will be a long time) so over time it will cost very little.

We have 4 Samsung LED tellys in the house, if for any reason I needed another or a replacement I'd go Samsung again without question.

We have a soundbar with the main TV in the living room, but not with any of the others. They are good, but not crucial if all you do is watch the occasional telly programme. For watching movies or music DVDs, they are a bit of a must really.
