Dave, try the user interface of any tv you fancy in the shop, priot to buying.
I have a Loewe TV and soundsystem. The picture quality is great. However, it is exceptionally bothersome and not intuitive to operate, with frequently a complete shutdown. It is a recurring pain.

That is the same development with us! TV is more and more outfading. After a working day and after supper I sit in the kitchen watching the latest i.e. world science festival discussions about „Lisa“ on my iPad.

We've got a Samsung, my parents a Sony. Not much (to my eye) to choose between them all. Only advice is make sure it can run apps (BBC iPlayer etc.) as this is becoming the norm for programs etc.

Good point. We’ve got quite a selection of different makes of TVs going on. The Toshibas from about 4-5 years ago are a pain. Pressing a button on the remote takes an age for something to happen which drives me nuts.

Ideal screen size depends on viewing distance you can sit a little closer with 4K than HD. Think carefully before you hang a big screen on the wall. Do you want to be looking up & get a stiff neck? If checking in the shop test the max viewing angle not just square on.

I bought the LG 55" OLED E7N last year, would highly recommend.
The picture quality is stunning when watching progs
like Blue Planet II on BBC IPlayer in 4k UHD.

The E7N has a built in sound bar which has allowed me
me to de-clutter speakers and still have decent sound.
But you can get 2 other LG 55" OLED's £500 cheaper that
don't have the sound bar, the C7V and the B7V, all have
exactly the same picture quality.
(I think the C7V is exclusive to Curry's, a company that
I avoid)

Dave - just bear in mind that size does matter. It depends on the size of the room and how far from the TV you sit. Ours is medium size in a medium sized room. Friends have an enormous one in a similar sized room - when I`m there I feel as though I`m at Wimbledon and come away with a sore neck. If you can`t see all of the screen without moving your head it is too big(the screen not the head- I would never accuse you of the latter!). Apart from that just go for a picture you like - most TVs have bells and whistles that the average viewer never needs and it`s more to go wrong.Think of it as the difference between a Morgan and a Chelsea Tractor.

Ours is 42" and more than big enough. I measured out bigger sizes and they would have dominated the room.

I did see massive screens in some houses that I used to visit before retiring and that put me off completely.

Big room/ big screen is fine ...medium room / big screen ...no!

I bought an LG OLED55C7V when we moved 5 months ago, it has superb picture and perfectly good sound, I do have a sound bar attached but rarely bother with it. I’m a wildlife and nature programme fan and the detail on this TV is spectacular.
My brother is a movie (blue ray) nut and has a massive TV (much too big for the room) and bought a curved screen type when they had just come out, I avoided them because they’re fine if you sit right in front of it but not so good if your at an angle as part of the screen is facing away from you.

One of Currys traditional cheats is to have "special models" made for them. In general there is no significant change over the normal model.

It allows them to make offers like "no one can beat our price on this model" and price matching etc. without being whacked by the advertising standards bunch.
