Rob from Hills Alive visited Monday afternoon to take a look at the S5 boot. It doesn't look particularly promising for a number of reasons;

1. The Hills Alive luggage is hard not soft so that you pack what you have into the bag in your room knowing the hard case will fit into the boot. As Rob quite rightly pointed out, there is no point in making it soft as you might just as well use a soft leather sports bag or carrier bags. This is to maximise AVAILABLE space in the boot.

2. The boot brackets and guide rails on the floor of the boot indicating where not to lay anything to allow the brackets to descend severely compromise space in the boot. Therefore the only real possibility for a bag/s is between the guide rails and possibly another smaller bag below this in the deeper cavity (between the brackets).

3. The boot opening is smaller than the internal space, therefore the bag size is compromised by the opening. I wasn't sure why Morgan could not have made the opening larger!!

4. Inside the boot on what would in effect be the boot top plate/roof, in front of the hood cavity there are lights (inside the boot). this fitting means any bag would have to avoid these and this roof is slightly angled so any bag would also need to be angled.

5. The spaces either side of the boot lid bracket guide rails are too small to make a decent bag and therefore it was felt best left to store softer luggage (i.e. shoe bags etc..).

Rob took various measurements and attempted to make a prototype but it was proving a little difficult. He has therefore gone away to have a think and then return and try a few ideas.

I'm still waiting on a response from the guy I'd been in touch with and had been through these problems with him.




I've a garage full of odd sized bags and no matter what I tried I still ended up with usable space being wasted. I bought a set of roll along luggage which work fine but leave about 4 inches of space that could be used. When I get around to it I'll post up some pictures.



I've found that two roll alongs work well but they have to be soft sided to get them in.



The other problem with the lights is once you have anything in the boot they are pointless. I've moved mine to the bulkhead.



Over the winter I'm going to make a couple of boxes to fit in the lower section that's between the guide rail and body, these can then be used for tyre gunk, tools etc. I found a couple of soft bags that will then fit snug on top of these for shoes etc.

I think Series 5 Aero luggage is going to be work in progress, but the person that nails it needs to get Morgan to start supplying it.

I'll post some pictures up once I get some hosting sorted out.

The chap from Hills Alive luggage came out, measured up and said he would get back to me. Never heard from him again!!!

I haven't seen my car since November as it's been away at a dealership and the factory. Out of sight out of mind!!

I'm of the opinion mind that due to the odd shape of the S5 boot, custom luggage may actually be more of a compromise than without. I went away last October and my wife and I used two sports bags in the middle and filled the outer edges with smaller bags/boots. Perfect.

I have found that I can get a selection of aircraft carry-on bags in quite comfortably.

How to fill all those small wasted spaces without having to carry endless small bags?

I was just looking at the gaps to the outside of the boot. Just as an outside the box suggestion ?

We filled in a couple of the gaps using large tupperware like containers. These contained all the computer PSU/camera/iPad things. When we arrived we simply took out a lightweight nylon (think parachute silk) sports holdall and put all of the smaller boxes into this for convenience. When empty the holdall folds to nothing and rested on top. A little bit of velcro held them all in place (about as much as the panels they were attached to anyway)

We did something similar last time out although I think we were getting some value out of our 5 pence plastic bags

The biggest problem with small items is that on the move they tend to migrate to the very bottom of the boot, never to be seen again.

It might be time to work out how to divide the boot up.

A suggestion perhaps would be to use some ply or similar thin board (carpeted of course) to divide the areas up a bit perhaps? Would stop everything rolling around if finished nicely and fixed in place.
