I have been getting multiple cold calls from Amsterdam offering me investment opportunites in Bitcoins. Could the party be nearly over?

On a slightly different bubble.
Two banks and four companies have just been fined €15 million over the selling of investments in diamonds with promises of secure profits to be made. The diamonds were sold to clients, it now comes out, at as much as double the market value. The banks have also charged commissions on the purchase and later on the subsequent sale of the diamonds. As well as the fine they now have to refund losses to their clients.
This was a bit of a bubble that occured all around the world and probably drove the price up at the time. Since 2011 however, with various ups and downs, the price of diamonds has remained reasonably stable.

I doubt that Bitcoin 'investors' will get any compensation.

Well the first hack (public and admitted at least) of a crypto bubble has occurred. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-japan...t-idUSKBN1FI06SCoincheck has been breached but amazingly the bank is offering recovery payments which I would only expect in Japan given the countries amazing culture. This leads to greater scrutiny as the next action. I would guess this will be applied to more of them.

Interestingly they know where the stolen coins are and who has them but cant do anything about it. Why not just cancel them?

I suspect that cancelling something which doesn't really exist may be a challenge. There was a report of a physical robbery in the press in the last few days where a family were held under threat until they had transferred their bitcoins to the crooks. They were listed as directors of an investment type company and had their home address visible on line, probably as part of the company record. Not a good idea.

Bitcoins can't be 'cancelled' because there's nobody "in charge" of the currency. There's no control mechanism to do so.
