swmboJnr and her husband to be are talking about a dog being as they both will be out at work . No points for those saying who will look after it . I have had staffies since childhood . I worry about what they purchase when children come along as we never had problems with our dogs when Jnr came along and she was a right little torment to them the dogs just took over, know wonder they got nicknamed nanny dogs . I have been reading up on Rhodesian Red Backs and its making my skin creep.

According to genius president D. T. the Red Pack is always evil.
So be careful - even outside of Rhodesia or Cuba

My business partner and Design Director has a male Ridgeback that she brings into the office twice a week

I’ve known it from a puppy

Lovely dog, lively and loves to play but very nice

It keeps wanting to stand next to me and presses its side into me as a way of affection

People with a good hand for dogs can handle Rhodesian Ridgebacks without any problems but people with lesser dog understanding may end up in desaster.
That‘s the case for 99% of all big dogs

How much research have they done themselves? And why do they want that particular breed as opposed to other breeds of dog?

Daughter is a veterinary physiotherapist and she has seen a few of these with elbow or hip dysplasia, she suggests getting any puppies checked over before buying as treatment can be very expensive.

We had a Rhodesian Ridgeback crossed with a Great Dane as a guard dog in Kenya. Trained by a S African it would attack anyone of colour who came to our residence (as the Kenyans call company houses). Firstly it knocked them over & it would look at me asking if it could do some damage.

One day I came back from work and the guard had tied him up which he was always told not to do.
I unleashed him & he shot off after a guy who was mending our fence. The guy jumped up into a tree & the dog sat below looking up at him. Apparently the guy from the maintenance company had tried to kick him once so he like the crocodile in Peter Pan was out for revenge.

But it was a lovely friendly dog. My daughter was I guess 18 months old & she would pull on his whiskers but he loved it.

They need to be trained properly and have space / exercise. Ours was always outside in the big garden. It would be cruel to lock such a big dog in all day.

I love to work with dogs and enjoy (nearly) every minute with them. But one needs time, more time und understanding.

I owned one many years ago. It was a lovely dog, with no issues whatsoever.

A friend of mine owned one until very recently. He was heartbroken when it died of old age.Again no problems.

This link gives a good overview in my opinion.
