Thanks for the help, both are dog nutters Jnr Has had my staffies from birth . At the age of 2 she tried to shove Champ from infront of the gas fire so she could get a warm . Would he hell move so she put his nose in the garlic press , he yelped and moved next time she bit his tail . I am thinking this when kids come along . Each Staffies would jump on her bed and snuggle in I had to go and tell them to get off the bed . Very very protective towards Jnr and Snr . Jnr's husband to be has had boxers most of his life and was into dog training BUT ITS NOT WORKING ON JNR SHE BITES BACK So its not them that bothers me its us who have to look after it when they are at work and on holiday and children to come . I used to fun fight the staffies on the carpet and champ would bite my hand and arm just to the point of thats enough . Its just the thought of children and I did read they chew furniture etc no not kids dogs . I am going to suggest they go and see some and let the HEAD rule the brain not the heart. I also feel and think a lot about a dog and the way it acts reflects on how its brought up and its family genes .

Almost all dogs are nice animals most of the time. What matters is how easy they are to provoke. And what provokes them.
When our kids were crawling and afterwards , we had two great danes in succession. The reasoning was that as big dogs they wouldnt feel threatened when the sprogs pulled tails, ears etc and that worked fine. But with ont of them and only on one occasion I got a glimpse of what they could be capable of when hunting in a pack. Not comfortable.
A friedn had a hunt terrier as a pet. Nice animal but bred to be aggressive. SWMBO bent towards the dog to do her usual goosy goo bit and the dog lept up a bit right through her lip and gum. Small aggressive dog.
I am older and more risk averse. Nowadays I wouldnt risk a big dog with kids - how would I rescue them? And I wouldnt risk a small agressive dog either. Dogs arent toys but kids treat them that way. The risk might be low but the consequences can be horrific.

JTL, Ask them how you'd be expected to control such a large dog physically if it's in your charge and it decides for one reason or another to ignore you and react to another (annoying rat of a dog out of control by another owner) dog or maybe it wishes to say hello to a cat?
My Old English had me over a couple of times ended up with cuts and bruises with his enthusiasm, not malice just sheer joy I was in my forties, I don't know how old you are but sometimes you have to factor things in, if a 54+kg dog decides he's going that way my 105kg was no match for his 4 leg drive.
Make sure you and the missus are upto the task, when my 10 boy pass on I am wondering being 55 now when it happens whether I'd be up to the task in another 4 or 5 years (I have a few things medically starting to show signs with age)
That said a well trained dog can be the best friend in the world.
Have to love that big black nose!

If they both work, get a cat.. Agreed, Doesn't seem right to keep a dog if it 's going to be left on its own for long periods - a good way for it to develop behavioural issues if you ask me. They are pack animals and need to be part of a pack.

My neighbour has one and she assures me that she has never been bothered by lions or elephants in her garden.

Tim a dog would not be left by itself whoever thought that needs to read the above more . It would be in the hands of June and I while they are at work . As for pack animals not many houses that can keep a pack unless its spades clubs and diamonds . I love dogs not all some can be nasty I always carry a large bag of dog biscuits in my Barbour jacket pocket . Learnt it of an old chap who owned the post office if he had to take any post out , he said a dog was more easy to handle if it was getting food .

My pal had two Ridge Backs - both great dogs.
BUT need a LOT of exercise every day. In my expereince no dog should be left for more than 3/ 4 hours when mature. And much less when pups and before at least one year old. Time left needs to be built up v gradually. Otherwise several serious problems will soon emerge.
Be kind to dogs!

My neighbour has one and she assures me that she has never been bothered by lions or elephants in her garden. ours hid in the garage when we had a hyena in the garden. Our house in Westlands Nairobi faced onto a forest. Can't say I blamed him.
