Trust me if you live in Africa having a guard dog is very necessary.
The nocturnal uninvited guest are usually drugged up & tooled up.

There are a lot of tattooed half-wits in England who keep a nasty dog as a badge of status. "don't worry, he won't hurt you, just wants to say hello"

I agree with you on that front Stuart. It is their intent to use them in a threatening manner and they teach them that behaviour. When my friend walks with his family and the dogs at the weekend the dogs are totally docile unless he really shouts at someone and he does not do this. It comes down to intent, there should be an instant asbo option for animals like there is for humans (and it should apply to the owner as well if they are leading the animals badly.)

I'm afraid I'm a bit more sensitive than that. Half-believing that the dog is harmless does not stop my grandchildren from being scared of it, they're not that discerning. Actually I'm scared too. There have been too may cases of dogs harming people. So why should I or my family have to put up with being frightened by someone letting his Rottweiler run loose in the local park? (Which happens frequently, several owners do it, and none of them stay near enough or look capable enough to pull the dog off) if they were walking about with an AK47 you'd think it was frightening, even if they said 'don't worry, it won't hurt you'. I feel rather strongly about this, as you can see.
And that's my last word on the subject, it's making me a little agitated.

Stringbag & I were attacked by a pair of rehomed American Bulldogs a couple of years ago. I had to lift him up to stop him being torn apart, and as a consequence had to suffer bites on me,
The Police were involved, but about as much use as a chocolate teapot, and it never made court but the dogs were big, powerful and off the lead.
I've had dogs all my life but I'm now scared if any big dog comes near, even if it's on the lead..

Sorry if my comments offended Stuart. I would like to think my comments most agreed with yours but perhaps this flat medium of interweb does not allow this. I do agree with you on them being managed at all times to avoid exactly what you describe.

Not offended at all Alistair, but, my opinion is that whether the owner thinks they are safe or not, or whether managed or not, they are scary to other people, which I do find offensive and anti-social. My round when we meet. (I'll be the one with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, but don't worry, he's harmless) And that's my last word, probably.....

I was brought up around dogs, so don't have any particular issues. But I am anxious around dogs that have had centuries of breeding to make them aggressive - pit bulls etc. They were bred for fighting therefore can be dangerous - I am not entirely sure why people would want to own them.

As long as someone needs to ask a forum about handling potentially agressive dogs he should stay away from that breed but not try to own that type of dogs. 🐕
