JTL - good luck to your daughter and son-in-law choosing their dog. Some good advice given in this thread. A good mate of mine had a Ridgeback and it is true that they form a very strong bond with one person who they consider their 'alpha'. It can be very difficult for the dog if they spend time with two 'owners' ie with your daughter and SIL in the evening and with you/June in daytimes. My mate's dog would be very dominant (to the point of growling) with his wife or visitors if his 'alpha' wasn't around. So on a sample of one, I'd think about whether this is the right breed. His was a male - I don't know whether a bitch would be different.
A bulldog (a breed I have kept for 20yrs) will give its obedience and affection to anyone who has ever given it a biscuit - and will reward this kindness by never forgetting. Much easier breed to spend time with different people (but very slow to train...)

Stuart thanks, a lot of what you say make sence . But we are talking Daughter and future SIL and I think its a bit of Pecking order going on . Its hard to step back and not bang their heads together I am not looking at it as two people to me the dog has to be included. Offered to buy them a S Bull T or a Bull Dog out of my own pocket . But he wants one to go long walks how the hell can he when his is at work and trying to climb the ladder and she wants one as a pet and short walks more to cuddle up to . He sometimes does not get in till midnight I often wonder if they know what they are letting themselves in for . future SIL lost his grand father on Wed so not the time to talk. Think in a few weeks time I am going to ask do they want to go and have a look around a dogs home I need to see how they act with dogs and each other while with dogs . This may( I SAID MAY ) make them see things in a different light .

Think in a few weeks time I am going to ask do they want to go and have a look around a dogs home I need to see how they act with dogs and each other while with dogs . That makes a great deal of sense JT  Might even find a compromise hound (as in size etc.) while there. My collie-X came from the local rescue centre.

They do not know it but I was thinking of doing a swap putting the two of them in and bringing a dog out. I would get more attention from the dog and that's not joking .

In my experience most dogs will be more than happy to go for long walks.
Breed type is v important - and fortunately there is lots of v good info on the web.
Your idea of a Dogs Trust visit is an excellent one!

You can never trust any dog 100 percent with a small child. *any* dog?   I see your dachshund likes to sleep in the bed too. Ours would if she could and lived for 17 years. Alis still misses her, they are a very particular dog. We now have a young pincher, in similar colours, who will get into the bed if she thinks she can get away with it. My little Millie
