Road tax (I believe it's actually properly called Vehicle Excise Duty) has never been hypothecated for road repairs or maintenance. Apparently, it was called road tax and used for road maintenance until 1937 (see below). It's been VED since then but still universally known as "road tax" over 80 years later. Much like the M.O.T. Test, which is still called that (even officially) despite the "Ministry of Transport" not existing since 1970. Is there any such thing as 'road tax'? ~iw

Shifting of freight from rail to roads has to have been a contributory factor to the condition of the roads, as do the heavier and heavier private vehicles as for money spent on the roads, the only roads worse than public ones appear to be private ones.

Think yourself lucky -- in Ireland with all our potholes, a roadster is a whopping €2250 PER ANNUM in tax. At least they don't describe it as road tax as the funds just go into the general kitty!!! Crickey ! That is a ridiculous figure , presume the Southern Ireland Govt is trying to get people to use buses , are there any in rural areas ? Noticed on my trips to Ireland, you are almost as likely to see a snake or a leprechaun rather than a sports car - punitive tax explains why.

bureaucrats in Brussels who by the way have NEVER BEEN AUDITED Sorry mate, this is simply incorrect. The European Court of Auditors checks the EU’s accounts and delivers verdicts on them annually. It actually gives two different opinions on them: whether they’re accurate and reliable, and to what extent there’s evidence that money is being received or paid in error. The auditors give a clean opinion on the accuracy and reliability of the accounts when they present a true and fair view of the EU’s finances and follow the rules of financial reporting. This has been the case since 2007. If they’re mostly fine, but have some problems, the auditors give a qualified opinion. This was the case before 2007. If they have extensive problems, they give an adverse opinion on the reliability of the accounts. This has never happened. 2016 was the first year that there was no significant level of error in the accounts. Still they will have less money to splash around when we leave.

No, the accounts are fine, 2016 was the first year in which there were no significant errors made in payments. Not that does not automatically mean fraud or waste, just that the rules weren't followed precisely - a procurement contract signed without being open to all bidders across the EU for example. There is indeed fraudulent behaviour going on, over-inflating expense claims for example, or claiming for costs for which one is ineligible, but the majority of spending is actually handled by the member states, not the EU itself. Nick Yes, I use it a lot for checking stuff. There's an awful lot of argument by assertion out there (not on Talk Morgan of course, we always assiduously check our references  ) and this site is great for finding out what the truth or otherwise of the matter is.

Southern ireland is EuroZone what do you expect you have to pay for the bureaucrats in Brussels Utter nonsense. How EU member states raise tax is their business; you really can't blame the EU for this. In France (also as you may have noticed, in the EU) we no longer have an annual road tax. Is that down to the EU ? No. So Ireland has decided to raise tax revenue from those who buy cars which are deemed to be polluting. That's entirely up to them.

Incidentally Robbie, I notice that the Caterham Seven 165 puts out a miserly 114g of CO2/km - so could be the way forward for Irish sports car fans, (pending the next re-engine of the 4/4 - hopefully with a unit which gets emissions below that 130g/km threshold).
