I know that Hammond said that all monies raised by VED would be used to improve the roads after 2020(?) but, as they say "if you believe that, I've got some ocean-front property in Arizona I can sell you at a knock down price".

It's easy to do, go to government web site and follow instructions

Surely the RAC/AA are doing this? But good point no one has approached me to sign and i am fed up with the road conditions.

Its not just pot hole, its the road rash from the loose stone every time you go out.

I live in Sussex but travel to work in Surrey, Sussex roads are bad but Surrey are by far the worse, some of the pot holes are bordering on weekend venues for the local caving group. Joking apart, we have just got rid of the bl88dy salt on the roads only to find pot holes everywhere....and my V11 lands on the doorstep.

We were in Surrey last year for Morgans at Brooklands, organised by a Taffmog member who lives in Surrey.
Their roads are not good. The traffic density is huge, hence poorer roads. Population is not dense enough to generate extra Council Tax to counteract the traffic.
The roads here in Carmarthenshire vary from good to utter c**p. Money is found for speed bumps/traffic calming but potholes ....no. Just an occasional limited purge.
I hate the use of chippings thrown onto bitumen as they neve seem to clean up the excess/loose chippings effectively or in a short time. Same for re-lining afterwards.
The latest boast from the Council Leader is the extension of cycle paths...really ell (expensive) constructions that I rarely see cyclists use, Months of traffic hold ups during construction for little use. Last week the leader was proudly extolling their expansion. I believe there is EU money coming in to help but still....better uses abound. They could build more walls on roundabouts (cynical comment).
There are also building projects that have created road problems. Housing and therefore access and extra traffic. Long queues. More planned causing rat runs to be generated to avoid choke points.....
OK...rant over.

It must be a rotten job if you're in charge of funding road repairs and to know you'll never catch with the pot-holes. We're a third world country from a roads perspective.
Still, when I was in Russia a few years ago we were driving into Moscow on an 8 lave motorway (4 lanes each way) from the airport and came across a pothole that was 6 lanes wide. Hope things don't get that bad

I got my tax renewal for the Roadster up £20 to £540. A whopping 3.9% increase. Glad to see HM Gov using it to keep the roads driveable.

John, 'showroom tax' on a new one this year is £1700

Sorry mate, this is simply incorrect.

The European Court of Auditors checks the EU’s accounts and delivers verdicts on them annually. It actually gives two different opinions on them: whether they’re accurate and reliable, and to what extent there’s evidence that money is being received or paid in error.

The auditors give a clean opinion on the accuracy and reliability of the accounts when they present a true and fair view of the EU’s finances and follow the rules of financial reporting. This has been the case since 2007.

If they’re mostly fine, but have some problems, the auditors give a qualified opinion. This was the case before 2007. If they have extensive problems, they give an adverse opinion on the reliability of the accounts. This has never happened.

As I understand it the Government fund and run Highways England (in theory a Ltd. Co. with one shareholder, the Minister of Transport, currently Chris Grayling) who maintain the motorways and trunk roads, all other roads are operated by local councils so nothing to do with receipts from the road fund license.
My council tax was only £2,500 this year so a bargain!
