Paul, I was told by a Wiltshire Council Councillor, when I asked why the national limit was being reduced to 50mph in many places, and in others to 40.
He said it was because the road surfaces were no longer fit to go any faster and there was no money to repair them. Reducing the limit would, it was believed, reduce claims on the Council for wheel damage.
He also said that the Police no longer had any say in the application of speed limits on rural roads, which means that most are unenforceable.
What a world... because of "Free" Third Party Claim lawyers we have to put up with stupid limits.

What a load of bull a lot of those roads have been resurfaced, the limits did not go back up.

I got nicked a few years ago on the A35 in Dorset. Between Lyme Regis and Winfrith, (where the Dorset Police Driver Awareness Course was held), a distance of 34 miles. The speed limit changed a total of 19 times! I pointed this out at the course. They said I should have been more observant. True, but

True, but They always have a well rehearsed answer Simon, and the final answer is, "would you have done that on your test?" Head banging indeed. Peter, your tale is very interesting. My local 20mph limit is never enforced apparently, because the Police do not have the resources..........
