by a scamera - first time in 30 years. In Wiltshire where as usual the NSL road had gone from 60 to 50 and now to 40, no buildings anywhere around, nothing on my side of the road but coming up to a right hand bend with trees on the verge there was a camera facing me that flashed twice. No chance to check my speed and slow down. No stripes my side of the road and I thought that facing cameras with white flashed were not allowed any longer. But it definitely was my car that triggered the camera. What really irritates is that I was behaving myself doing 30 in the 30 limits etc. But whereas it used to be sufficient to drive sensibly according to the surroundings ( ie you knew when you were in a built up area at 30mph, and most open roads arent good for more than 60 anyway) with the proliferation of silly reduced limits its now a case of spot the sign. Easier said than done with forests of road signs all over, and sudden short changes in speed limits. On one of these clever motorways near us you will do several miles with 50 on the gantireis, then one gantry will say 40 then back to 50 immediately afterwards. With no obvious reason other than to catch people. Harumph!!! So its wait for the NIP now.

Sorry to hear that. I agree about the variable motorway speed limits. The M25 often has one 50 sign then nothing & you just don't know what the limit is.

If one had recently done a Speed Awareness Course, then one would be fully up to speed with the law regarding Gateway and repeater signs, and the arrangements for limit gradients (ie going though 30 - 40 - 50 limits and vice versa).
They also gave us a bit of training about hazard awareness which was very useful.

I was flashed last night on the M40. It was the gantry with temp 40 speed limit on it as I was a hundred yards from it, it returned to NSL on the digital screens so accelerated back up to 70 and went under it and camera on gantry flashed.
What is interesting is I have front and rear cameras in the Tesla and have located the footage approaching the gantry and it clearly shows the signs at 40mph and then changing to NSL a hundred yards or so before I pass through and the rear footage shows the subsequent flash.
If I get a ticket, I will be going to court and producing my own photographic evidence!

At a recent speed awareness course I was told that the previous 40mph would have effect until you actually passed the gantry, it's only NSL after the gantry. Any Bobbies out there?

I was also told that if you approach a revised lower speed limit on a smart motorway, and are still slowing down as you pass the gantry, the sensor will think that you are braking for an incident, and post a lower speed limit. That's why they seem to change randomly. On the course, they said they'd rather have people on the course than fine them, so that more people understood, and the limits would be maintained higher. they also said that very soon the limits would be enforced RIGIDLY.

Shooter your Tesla is one of the fastest accelerating cars !
The Act of 2012 states:These Regulations introduce variable speed limits Regulation 3 provides for variable speed limits to have effect on the roads specified in the Schedule. Where variable speed limits are in operation a vehicle may not be driven at a speed above the maximum indicated by each speed limit sign passed by the vehicle, until either the vehicle passes a sign indicating that the national speed limit applies or the vehicle leaves the roads covered by the regulation. Where a speed limit changes less than 10 seconds before a vehicle passes the sign and the sign had immediately before the change indicated a higher speed limit, the regulation allows a driver to drive up to the maximum applicable before the change. Where the speed limit sign indicates a speed limit when it is passed by a vehicle but, less than 10 seconds previously, it was either giving no indication of a speed limit or indicated that the national speed limit applied, the sign is to be taken as giving no indication of a speed limit to the vehicle passing it. It is an offence to use a special road in contravention of Regulations made under section 17(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Perhaps everyone should do a speed and safe driving course every 5 years, if only to keep up with the ever changing rules!
The comment SFG made about rigid enforcement is a view held by a minority of Police Force heads, but is not (yet) policy set by the Association of Chief Police Officers.
Their policy remans that the threshold for a NIP is the posted limit plus 10% +1mph.
There is an equally vehement group of Chief Police Officers who want the limit on Motorways and other roads built to Motorway standard to be raised to 80mph. Again, this is the view of a minority.
Given the inherent over reading of most car speedometers this means that to get a ticket on a motorway for exceeding the limit most cars would be showing 80 on the speedo.
