A fair point Graham but the goal is to control speed without road police being exhausted ? Making people more aware cannot hurt ?

Oh yes. Quite agree.
But if you look at the "Kill your speed not a child" including the "It's 30 for a reason" adverts in the last few years I can think of several acquaintances who would take no notice of the ads.
So, should there be more advertisements or whole programmes?
'Fraid I don't know the answer Alistair smile
Thinking about it, I haven't read the latest Highway Code, either blush

The biggest issue from my point of view is that the more that people demonstrate that they are unable to manage their own use of speed in a sensible way, the more likely it becomes that government will take steps to completely remove that choice from us.

Managed motorways with variable speed limits are the perfect example of this. We know, because there has been an enormous amount of research done on the problem, that when motorways become congested the best way to improve throughput and decrease journey times is to reduce the peak speeds of individual cars and get everyone flowing at a lower average speed. Otherwise you get compression waves running through the traffic leading to those hold-ups with no obvious cause with which we are so familiar.

So the signs are switched on when the bunching is observed, to reduce this and decrease people's journey times - and yet still people moan and do things like speeding up between the gantries, which just makes the problem worse. Next step - average speed monitoring, and so it goes.

We are the authors of our own misfortune.

Just to clarify if I may. By enforcing rigidly I mean that, applying the known rules and allowances, the cameras will always be on and we will always get a ticket.

The course was at pains to point out that the smart motorway system is designed to get maximum flow of vehicles, as governing speeds has been proved to achieve just that.
You still get morons trying to under-take and gain a few precious seconds, I suppose that used to be me when I was driving long distances. At one time it was just reps in basic cortinas and chavs in grotty cars but now everyone can get a nice car on the never never. (Even me) It's still a surprise to see a CLS driven by a cloth-head but they are all over the place now. Rant over.

I have had points and speed awareness in the past.
All for marginally outside the limits.....36 etc.
OK...my fault, no issues there.
What does annoy me though are some speed limits on the roads. Nearby here there are several that defy logic. A 30 limit on an unpopulated open road where 50 would be more appropriate with reductions at the ends of the road. I have not seen any speed camera vans on it ...yet.
Opinions of speed enforcement are mixed....
A clear plus where the road demands it...good idea.
A clear cash generator where camera vans etc are locat d “cleverly” to catch the 10%+2 speeders.
Poor wording used by the anti speed/car lobby that doean’t get challenged. Fear of those in power to challenge it.
I am all for sensible limits at certain locations but we seem to be pandering to the eco/safety/cash generating groups who use often distorted stats and arguments.
“Speed kills”.
Hmmmmmm

Yup. I freely confess that I don't always rigidly adhere to speed limits out of built-up areas, but I would never speed on roads with which I am unfamiliar. or where limits are changing.

Heard nothing so presumably I must have been within the limit. That said I dont know what the limit was at that spot nor what speed I was doing. Just trundling along as you do.

Could be the camera wasn't in the box, they get moved around but the flash still works.
