Your Mog looks great. Congratulations. It sounds to have been a great trip. The Antrim Coast Road has to be one of the most scenic roads anywhere (on a good day). On the Scottish side we often use the A75 in Autumn-Spring when we travel from the IoM to our place in County Cork. It also has great scenery and those perfect bends that make driving a joy. A stop at the Old School House west of Castle Douglas is highly recommended as is the Galloway Smokehouse at Carsluith on Wigtown Bay .

I've seen the Old Schoolhouse several times but have always driven by. Maybe next time I'll make a point of stopping. Galloway Smokehouse sounds enticing too. We spent a few Hogmanays at the North West Castle hotel in Stranraer, it was great fun and gave a chance to explore the local area. I always enjoyed a pint at the harbour in Portpatrick.
So is the A75 really the quickest way to get from IoM to Cork? Or does your wife do the map reading? (runs for cover)......

Smooth ones?

Well the M25's pretty smooth but I wouldn't recommend it! Smooth is definitely a factor but it's got to be twisty as well with very little traffic. So come on Howard, name a road that meets all of those criteria, preferably with a caff or a pub at the end of it!

Errrmmmm....yes she does and it's a long story. We have a few route choices when the Summer sailings from the IOM to Ireland stop. The shortest way is probably via Liverpool-Dublin but Dublin is a nightmare. So that leaves a northerly or a southerly route. After much trial and error the wife selected the northerly one because she likes the P&O ships from Cairnryan to Larne (a very rational basis for guiding he who must obey). I just go where I am pointed....

You can now go round Dublin via the Port tunnel to the M50( you enter the tunnel at the Port) and thence to the N8 - motorway to Cork. Thus you do not have to suffer the Dublin traffic anymore!!

This route would save you a few hundred miles!!!

The High Speed Ships (HSS) from Stranraer to Belfast are excellent (and faster). We used to go from Cairnryan to Larne but used the HSS the last time. I would recommend it, then it's only an hour and a half to Dublin.

Loads of such roads round here in SE wales. From Chepstow to Usk and then onto Abergavenny via the old road. From Aber there's a good choice through the Brecon Beacons to Builth and then Newtown

All depends on how far you want to go. Only problem in Mid Wales is that there isnt much of a selection of pubs or cafes and some of those that do exist are dire.
