Drive in reverse & hit the brakes to free them up.

You didn't fail to release the handbrake fully by any chance?

So I have taken the car to work - only 5 miles - and the slightly rubbing brake drum is slightly warmer - but not too hot to touch so there is no smell.

But, the smell is present - if only very slightly - and is under the bonnet at the back of the engine.

The clutch did not slip - I tried full throttle up some "hills" (it is Suffolk!) and no detectable slippage.

I did check the clutch fluid again and it looks decidedly dark (it was the brake fluid that was nice and clear) - I can change that easily I guess, but would it cause the issue?

Luckily the journey home will be much longer (!) so I can get it up to temperature and have a probe.

Sod's law at play here methinks - it's been driving perfectly all summer....

I did wonder about the handbrake so checked - I never put it on in the garage, and it was indeed fully off.

Maybe a daft question, but it's nothing to do with the heater motor is it?

When the heater motor burnt out on my subaru the electrical smell was similar to burning clutch/brakes. Don't know where the motor is on yours, but just a thought....

The other thing to check is the wiper motor. I had one burn out on an MG, same as the one fitted to my 4/4. Caused by the slip ring failing & it trying to run “ish”. It smelt like burnt biscuits.

Ok so a nice run of about 20 mins and there is a faint hot aroma. But nothing more. Brakes seem fine. I don't like these mysteries before a long trip... thanks for your help folks.

Ill drive it all week and see how we go

Nick,

Mine would occasionally smell of burning after a long run, but not always, eventually decided it was road 'crap' burning off that was flicked up on the cat, hence not on every run out

Sounds a bit like mechanical hypochondria. If the brakes arent hot to the touch after using the car then they arent binding. If the clutch doesnt slip in top gear full acceleration then no problem there. Only 9k miles - may well be just dust on the exhaust or catalyst if fitted. Give it a good thrashing for 20 or 30 miles and see if anything is wrong afterwards.
