Just greased the front suspension, checked tyres etc ready for a trip to France. Had a quick 20 minute drive to get everything up to temp and check all is ok. After adjusting the gearknob, again... so probably 5 mins, I put the car in the garage. 5 minutes later there is a distinct smell of burning clutch or brakes. Never noticed this before. Usualky theres a wiff of hot coolant. But it wasnt bad enough to notice in the first 5 minutes when I was fiddling with the gear knob. Sniffing around it wasnt the brakes... I suspect clutch.
Now I'm a bit concerned about the trip. I'll try and drive the car during the week to see what happens, but just thought I'd consult the TMers in case there is something I should look out for. The cad has only done 9k miles....

I don't know how old your car is at that mileage but has it had the clutch fluid changed at all - if it's over 3 years old that is recommended along with the brake fluid.
Does it look up to level and clear.

If the clutch felt OK on the drive, ie not slipping, i'd think it might well be a sticking/binding brake.
Is the car easy to push? / is any wheel hotter than the others? Maybe best bet is jack it up and check each wheel is free to turn

Wheels seem ok... I went round them. The car is 2010 and no the fluid hasn't been changed as far as I know. It is up to level snd clear. I'll check slippage on next drive but noticed nothing on this drive.

If anything on these it'll be the drums on the rear.

The rear wheel cylinders are of poor quality and have been known to seize within 2 years of manufacture so if the clutch seems ok just put your hand on the centre of the rear wheels after a run and you'll soon know.
It is mainly because of this that regular brake fluid changes are advised, you can get them lined with stainless steel but they are cheap enough and it's an easy job.

Thanks folks I shall check. It had a full brake service and fluid change in march. But clearly things can fail at any time

Definitely check the rear wheel cylinders. I have just had mine changed as they were sticking. The factory didn't want to know about it despite regular servicing.

Right only had time for a quick check. The rear left is rubbing a little more than the right but its not noticeably binding. I'll do a run after work tomorrow and check. Quick question... are these drums self adjusting? Haven't looked closely enough to see how to slacken them off (I was quite adept on the vw type 2, but this is bound to be different).
