This is not uncommon now Neil. When you renew you probably go for quotes to try and get better pricing. They will specifically ask you if you have ever had insurance cancelled, denied or refused for this very reason. As always saying the wrong thing means your new premium is illegal and if ever tested will be cancelled. This leaves you in a deep pit.

In Venice now. Yes The French insurer Generali will not insure the Skoda once the contract ends and yes he was clocked at120kph on a 90 stretch and because he was new at the time, should not have exceeded 80 kph. HE was passing the only lorry, indeed the only vehicle on the road going uphill. I will need to change the insurance co as I cannot be penalized for this.

"cancelled, denied or refused" - might not be the same as this situation.

The policy is being allowed to run until renewal, so it is not cancelled. Upon renewal, the insured parties will no longer meet that insurer's underwriting criteria. That's no different to Admiral declining to cover my modified Defender or Hiscox declining to cover a 17 year-old. These are commercial decisions based on how different insurers select their cohort risk.

To be fair, it's 40kph over the limit of 80kph not 30, so pretty much half the limit again and as has been said, quite a punishment. Whether it's fair or not is the perennial question..

Yes, it's why I asked the question. I wasn't quite sure if it was the son who was being denied, or both father AND son.

If the policyholder (the OP) has been refused his own insurance, then this is going to be a major headache.

A friend's son was recently refused insurance, which, as you say, has to be declared. He is now off the road as he cannot find anyone to cover him.

My contact (an agency) said that the insurance company now sees both parent and child as being at fault in BAD cases. The child will be denied insurance both as an individual and also as a named driver. The denial period will likely be longer than the ban and listed for the obligatory five years.

Don't forget it is the parent that has the contract and so responsible for the position in their opinion. The parent may be at risk of having their cover cancelled with that provider as you outline. It means on the parents renewal the least you can expect is a significant increase in premium and scrutiny. If you look around competitors will often not quote without considerable discussion.

It's a difficult issue for both sides. Insurance companies remain under pressure to keep the prices controlled and so are becoming more difficult around risk. They no longer worry about saying no which is how we were conditioned to deal with them.

The best method of handling this is to get off the Internet and use a well respected broker and document it very carefully. Sorry to say but the child's penalty will basically mean they take a time out, blackbox enabled, restricted car choice and a strong recommendation to drive like a princess for a bit to get them out of the sin bin. The parents will need to shop around and show they are no longer carry additional drivers.

I am just repeating what i was told by a friend who works in insurance.

A key question: is refused insurance any different from "declined to quote"?

When shopping around for insurance I've been told, on more than one occasion, that the insurer does not quote on that vehicle, or for business use, or... or....

I have never considered that as "refused insurance", rather a business decision by the insurer. Indeed on one occasion they offered to cover one car, but not the other.

Declined in those circumstances is not refused, it's like your baker saying he doesn't sell milk.
