I did ask at the time and the sales guy said the clutch was normal. I very much doubted that it was but in one way that wouldnt matter because my choice would have been the auto with the paddles. A l;ater model to get round the driveline shunt.
This is what I wrote about the car at the time:
"On to the Aero which was a 40000 mile series 3 in light green with a green wheel – the owner is an Irishman who is buying a series 5. It has to be said that its a beautiful thing to look at and far the most distinctive car of the three. If you like little boys on the street to point at you, if you are the sort of person who looks at his refection in shop windows, then this is the car for you. The seats are comfortable and well finished in nice leather. The steering wheel is a foot too near your chest but we’ll give them that in a faux 30s roadster style car. And the Aero has much the nicest / most distinctive internal finish. I just love a bit of wood in a car interior and this car has some nice pieces plus a turned ally dash. Very attractive and a design tour de force. The epitome of a British car interior.
Start the engine dip the clutch, stall the engine and start off again. No red face this time. If the Aero’s looks are wonderful the clutch is dire. I would go further – to my mind its a safety hazard with a violent switch from pedal fully depressed to pedal forced back open and likely to result, if you are not very careful , in running into the car in front in a stop start traffic queue. The gearshift is lighter than the Lotus by some margin but thanks to the clutch and some drive line shunt, gear changes are jerky.
The car has a side exhaust and the bellow of a V8 that erupts when the engine is started is really loud and nice in a look-at-me sort of way. This would be fun on short runs but no way would I find it tolerable on a 400 mile autobahn sprint. But worse was to follow as soon as the Aero was rolling. Perhaps the poor Aero was disadvantaged by following the sublime handing of the Lotus, but it felt both awkward and insecure on the bends. The car accelerated like a scalded cat between bends but I felt the need to slow down far more round corners than I would have done in the Lotus . The Aero is a muscle car with huge visual and style attractions in the American fashion but for me it isnt a sports car. A flawed beauty."
I still rather fancy one to be honest.

Was not the one recently sold. Only 24,000 miles, so side exhaust.

Yes very nice colour ... I have to confess that I am glad of your report on condition otherwise mine would be worth less than I thought! Not that I have any intention of parting with it!

Howard the one you looked at was a Series 3 ... Yes, thats what I wrote. It was a car owned by an Irishman hence the green steering wheel ( of all things!). Hung around at Williams for ages. Got to be a year or more.
