Went to see the world premier of “They Shall Not Grow Old” this evening in our local cinema. This was a film directed by Peter Jackson and commissioned on behalf of 14-18 NOW, Centenary Arts Commissions, Imperial War Museums and BBC.
He used state-of-the-art technology to transform original archive footage dating back over 100 years into coloured footage at the correct speed and brings to life those who served, and died, in a way never before seen.
Soldiers who hitherto had been grainy black and white figures moving without sound became real humans who would be instantly recognisable to those who knew them.
An amazingly powerful film enhanced by the use of lip readers and actors who dubbed voice over the film to bring these incredible characters to life on screen.
Well worth seeing if you get the chance, particularly with the centenary of the end of WW1 only a few weeks away.
We will remember them.

Thanks for the heads up I'll look out for this.

I liked the RBL wooden crosses posted out this year, ours will be joining many others in Wiltshire carrying it's message of thanks to all who gave everything in order that we may be free.

Ringing the "muffled" peal on Armistice Sunday sends a shiver down your back every time I ring it is an absolutely haunting sound.

The only other time such a peal is rung is at the funeral of a fellow bell ringer and is equally draining.

Well the other exception is that it's rung when the reigning Royal passes away.

I too saw it last night.
It’s a superb documentary, voiced entirely by the archived voices of those who survived the conflict.
Ultimately it demonstrates the sheer horrors and futility of war and the killing of your fellow man. It’s left an indelible mark on me that’s for sure.
Please go and see it......it’s not an easy watch at times, bloody, gory, scary, but fabulous.
In the Q&A with peter Jackson afterwards, he mentioned that they’d scanned and processed over 100 hours of footage for the IWM.

Looking forward to seeing it. What little I have seen on TV looks amazing. Unfortunately it is on in the evening of 11/11 just when we have volunteered to carry torches at Felixstowe in a parade to remember the 134 dead from the are in WW1.

But I understand the BBC will also broadcast it.

I too saw the clips last night and was very impressed with Peter Jackson who seemed to have a real empathy with the subject and the task he undertook so diligently. The difference the addition of colour has made to ones perception of the event is staggering. One can only imagine what further impact the Imperial War Museum / BBC documentary 'The Great War' would have had, had it been in colour. The same would have applied to the 'World at War' documentary covering the second World War.

Went to a remembrance parade in Cornwall when I was in the RAF, I always remember a roll call of a village that lost ALL of its men of serving age in a single day!

Always remember that in the silence.

Mr Jackson is very invested in wwi he has funded an aviation museum in Omaka near Blenheim in New Zealand well worth a visit if you are ever there.

Well I am loving the cinema in Felixstowe. On hearing that the timing of the film clashed with the torch lit parade for the WWI dead they moved the how back 1/2 h. So I can now carry a torch & see the film.

A thing to be very proud of John.

My recollection of my Grandfather was of him sitting in an armchair staring into middle distance he was so affected by his WW1 duties.
We were told not to speak to him unless he spoke to us and to keep quiet - so sad really that we never knew him.
