I too saw the clips last night and was very impressed with Peter Jackson who seemed to have a real empathy with the subject and the task he undertook so diligently. The difference the addition of colour has made to ones perception of the event is staggering. One can only imagine what further impact the Imperial War Museum / BBC documentary 'The Great War' would have had, had it been in colour. The same would have applied to the 'World at War' documentary covering the second World War. Wow doesn't it bring the films to life and having sound albeit "dubbed" is brilliant. I must admit watching anything about the First WW, absolutely kills me...they were all so innocent...brave brave lads and lasses.

There's a trailer on youtube with Peter Jackson talking about the technical challenge but also his own personal connection to the documentary. His grandfather was in the trenches. Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo is great read too - we saw it performed live on stage and there wasn't a dry eye in the house the sheer scale of losses is incomprehensible.

Richard I'm a big fan of Michael Morpurgo but haven't read Private Peaceful. Will now do so. On the return journey from Le Mans Classic in my dear old mog I fulfilled a long postponed promise and visited the Australian National Memorial to the fallen of WW1 at Villers-Bretonneux in the Somme valley. The memorial lists more than 10,000 names of Australian soldiers with no known graves and as well there are more than 2,000 graves of soldiers and airmen from commonwealth countries. A friend and I spent several hours there on a beautiful summer's day. We had intended to go on to the memorial at Pozieres but simply ran out of emotion and tissues and so headed home. Too difficult to comprehend by far.

I have an uncle (on the Irish, Mum's, side of the family) buried at Perth Cemetery (China Wall) in Belgium, killed at Ypres 13 June 1915. One day, once I have a new passport (and preferably sooner rather than later) I must pay a visit. I have all the details of the plot/grave &c. Still to determine whether there is anyone on Dad's side left behind over there. Emotional photo Kerry - well done

Kerry, Thanks for sharing that memory and emotive photograph they just fill you with a sense of helplessness and awe at the same time the sheer scale of it all and this picture encapsulates everything. This book I thought was very encouraging from Harry Patch. Henry John Patch (17 June 1898 – 25 July 2009), dubbed in his later years "the Last Fighting Tommy", was a British supercentenarian, briefly the oldest man in Europe and the last surviving combat soldier of the First World War from any country. He is known to have fought in the trenches of the Western Front.

We went to see the film at the Showcase Cinema this afternoon. What a powerful film! Showed the full horrors of war and being in colour (mostly) makes it much more relatable.
One of the things that shocked me was the men saying that it was the best time of their lives and some saying that they were really disappointed when it was over. A perspective that I hadn’t even considered before. They also struggled when they returned home because no one that hadn’t taken part had any concept of what they’d been through.
