Mine passed! So did my Fiesta with something similar in the dip beam, and at the same test station as the M3W. Should have been an automatic failure for both as you say. I think it's an excellent test station that I use.

I just bought Halfords +150% H4 bulbs. From past experience on my wife's previous car, a Ford Convertible Coupé, where the original headlights were very poor on dip, these uprated bulbs don't last very long and I suspect with the vibration levels on the M3W, even shorter life but as I don't use it much at night, I will live with that. I will try and improve the aim this evening.

To follow the letter of the law you cannot put LED bulbs in a unit designed for halogen. The LEDs wont be E marked & likely marketed as off road use only. To fit LEDs you need a complete lamp unit.
There is a loophole for pre 1968 ( I think) vehicles so I did fit some to my 1930 Sunbeam. I can now see to drive at 40 mph rather than 30mph & the dynamo can keep up. I still avoid driving it after dark.

I would always replace the entire unit for LED. With HID you can sometimes get away with just replacing the bulbs. It depends on the shape of the reflector and the front lens. They work very well on my 1977 Porsche 911, with very good definition, spread and no stray dazzle. These were quite expensive conversion units from a German supplier (about £120 for the pair including ballast/starters and relays). You can buy the bulbs on their own at around £40 each, which I had to as one had a failure of the dip beam solenoid after a couple of years. My MOT man commented that they were one of the few HID conversions which he was happy about passing. I have Ohlins self levelling struts at the back of my 911. which makes the headlights legal without a levelling device on the lights.
