We watched it in the cinema after a torchlight procession in Felixstowe. An amazing film on the big screen.
my grad father fought at Gallipoli in the Welch regiment & went on to Egypt, The Holy Land & Damascus. So last nights Great War Horse programme on BBC 4 gave me an idea of what he went through.

This film was unexpectedly very disturbing and uncomfortable to watch.

To me it made it all come alive vs the B&W stuff. I hope they apply to other old films.

To me it made it all come alive vs the B&W stuff. I hope they apply to other old films. Yes agree, I hope they carry on and work on more footage and expand this technique to a broad range of early documentary film, including the Second World War It will revolutionise how we view and recall history

The film was shown on BBC last Sunday at 9.30pm. You can get it on catch-up if you missed it. I watched it again. Just as emotionally sobering the second time.

This film was unexpectedly very disturbing and uncomfortable to watch. I found the same. I think it was because the film speed was normal, the colours realistic and the voices and back ground sounds, all lacking from the original. It was the sight of the maimed horses thrashing about I found particularly harrowing. And the rats and muck in the trenches. Inhuman, from every respect. Never forget that in parts of the world this still goes on: the scale is smaller, but the consequences to society the same...or worse.

The Generals who were sending these poor lads to be slaughtered were safely ensconced in their chateaus some 2 or more miles back from the front lines. I wonder if they had experienced just one day in the trenches would they have thought twice about continually sending yet more young souls to their deaths?
We will never know, of course. Yet today we have the most powerful man on earth, who dodged the draft to serve in Vietnam by claiming disability due to bone spurs (!) now deciding that he would not attend a Rememberance service at an American war graves cemetery because it was raining! This man would have fitted in very well in the Chateau behind the lines 100 years ago.

Conflicts between nations should be settled by Mortal Combat between the elected leaders. Oh, that means Putin would rule the world. Bad idea.
