I'd agree. I've spent a fair amount of time and money getting my 4/4 to how I want it, and I love it to bits, but if I was starting again I think I'd be looking for a Duratec +4.

If my 4/4 Anniversary had had stainless wheels and an easy up hood I would have kept it...................
The GDI engine isn't quite as good as the Duratec.

If the "narrow tyres" don't put him off, I would seriously consider a Zetec 4/4 so that he can get the later long door model with Stainless steel bulkhead and rack and pinion steering. Easily under £25,000.
Then as funds and time allow tune the Zetec to get +4 type performance.
If he's hands on, £2500 will cover the upgrade. I have driven in company with a Zetec 4/4 that had throttle bodies, a sports exhaust and a mild road cam fitted. I suspect they had a lower diff ratio than the later Plus 4 and I have to say that in real world on-road performance it lacked nothing by comparison to my car. On an uphill drag in top gear I could not have passed him.

But if you go back to the beginning of the thread, the budget is £20 - £25,000. GPWM. In which case a Zetec 4/4 would be an excellent alternative. To my mind, the big difference in characteristic between 4/4 and +4 is not the power, but the narrower tyres and the final drive ratio. 5" rims and a 4.11 diff make more a much sportier feel. 5.5 or 6" rims and a 3.7 diff make the +4 feel much more of a tourer.

I’ve always wanted a plus 4, but my budget wouldn’t stretch. I bought the newest Morgan I could afford which is my 4/4 1.6cc Sigma from Williams Automobiles I don’t think I could part with it now, and it’s probaly just as fast as a plus 4 with the upgrades anyway, which is all part of the fun. I love it to bits

For me, this is the whole point about Morgans - they are all about building up a relationship with the car over a long period - none of them offer instant gratification and they all have niggles which need to be ironed out. It doesn't matter what you end up with so long as you love it. I know there are folks out there who like to change their car more frequently than I change my undercrackers, and jolly good for them too, but I honestly think they are missing out a bit on the enormously rewarding aspects of long-term ownership.
