Yes, Easter, that is exactly what I had in mind, though I would take a string which is a little more substantial (to give better grip).
Vitruvius, are you sure about the itchy twine? I prefer a smooth "surface" because it is friendlier to the skin when the wheel is gliding through the hands (which is impossible in my 4/4; it has practically no self centering).

Thanks for the photos Easter. Great reference for different wheels as well. Looks like wood makes a better long lasting material for a steering wheel than bakolite.
Well, I finally did it. I took off the steering wheel and wrapped it with 3/16" stretchable cotton clothesline. It is very comfortable to the hand. It worked great. I will post a picture. It was easier than I thought to take the wheel off. I took off the bolt with a wrench and a towel so not to mar the chrome, then jiggled the wheel for about 3 minutes until it finally broke loose and came off. It is an amazingly tight fit on the grooved shaft. I fell back only 6 inches or so. LOL.
