Looking for some advice please. Have searched the forum but cannot find anything that relates to this...

On my previous Caterham Seven's I have installed a hand held extinguisher (1.75lit AFFF type) using the supplied bracket and by drilling into the chassis cross member in front of the passenger seat and using self tapping screws.

Is there any reason why I cannot do the same on the Roadster?
Is there a better place to install (perhaps between the seats)?
Where do the racers put them (if not using a plumbed-in system)?

I keep my (small) extinguisher down the side of the seat between seat base and sill. There's enough room, and to stop it rattling about it sits in one of those (wait for it...) neoprene mats sold to walkers. The mat folds into three sections, so easily makes an L shape which holds the extinguisher snug. I also used a red one - colour co-ordination is everything.

In my +4 I have it screwed to the floor just behind the chassis cross member. That means the passenger seat will not go fully forward but that is not too much of an inconvenience. When I had the +8 there was room on the wheel arch at my right shoulder but the +4 is narrower there. Likewise there is no room down the side of the seat. Always happy to hear of any other suitable locations

Finally went for fixing to the floor ahead of the cross member so I can still adjust the seat and its not in the way of the passengers knees or prohibits ingress/egress.

Is it possible for you to post photos, I had the same question in mind and just bought one, so your help will be welcome !!!

Not to say that DaveW's neoprene isn't doable, but in boats there's the Lloyd's standard which dictates steel brackets for fire extinguishers.

This, of course, is so it will stay in place, regardless of knockdowns or UV light and salt water degrading plastics.

I know that a car is hardly a boat, and it may be overkill, but I kind of like the idea that the extinguishers stays in place, even in the event of rear shunt or a roll.

You can get some nice stainless (or black powder coated if you want) holders for extinguishers. It might make it look "the bizz".

As for placement, I don't know.

Paul, as a side note, the new Plus 4 SuperSport has the option of a plumbed-in system from the factory. Therefore, if you were interested in this over and above a stand hand held, I am sure they could advise (or even fit it for you).

In racing the extinguisher has to be plumbed in and mechanically or electrically operated.Advantage of plumbed in is quicker fire knockdown. Disadvantage for road cars inquisitive fingers pulling the release and covering engine bay in powder.(Although you can leave the safety pin in to prevent it being accidentally discharged)
Hand held and plumbed in need to be screwed securely to floor of passenger footwell. Put on roll bar they become a dangerous missile in an accident.
