I'm trying to find the stamped engine number on an early Ford 1600 crossflow engine. It's a 2737E6015B block with casting number T2, a 1966/7 batch. Unlike later cars including other similar blocks from casting T4 onwards, the early castings didn't have the upturned bell adjacent to exhaust port number 1, where later engine numbers are stamped on the head/block face.
Anyone got a very early crossflow engined 4/4 (1968, chassis numbers B1600-B1850 ish) and know where to locate the stamped engine number?

(4/4 competition roadster B1800, build commenced Oct.'68 shipped to Canada in January 1969.) I didn't know it's engine serial # until 2007 when I acquired the factory chassis record. Never saw stamped ID on the engine, anywhere!.....

I just can’t explain why a unique engine number would be allocated if it wasn’t visible?

From very faded memory is it distributor side about three inches higher than the sump on the lower side of the block near the engine mount. If the engine has been re built at anytime the numbers may have been removed.

I pored over this area very thoroughly and saw nothing in the form of
a metal stamping or of a suitable surface to apply one. I have owned the car since Nov.'70,....It has a T3 block casting.

Bert I wonder if those engines were supplied to Morgan without numbers , if you owned the car from 1970 I very much doubt it was re built unless it was removed or uprated . A mate of mine sent an engine away to a famous builder in the uk i n the 70s called Vegan tune and it came back with the numbers missing but that was a twin cam.

Hiwex, what is on your registration document? The V5
It should show an engine number?
Unless Morgans are exempted?
I think kitcars need engine numbers to be certified. Also for MOT to determine emissions testing.

I have the V5, I know the number, I’m just looking for it on the engine.
I’ve been sent the correct owners manual for the period, so now I know where it should be, but often wasn’t - that’s Morgan..... Talking to old Ford forum members it’s likely the engine number at the time was on a label that was removed during manufacture.
Mystery solved, next time it get the engine rebuilt I’ll get the correct number stamped where the manual says it should be.
