Totally agree with the comments above. When serving in the Commandos I learned escape and evasion driving for uncover work. Simply the best training you could have, resulted in my desire for speed and racing. However, I have great respect for the power of my +8 and M3W and the other idiots on our roads.

I put the blame firmly in Top Gears lap.......they have encouraged a tail out style of driving.🙄.

Very tongue in cheek! Mind you we did meet a guy in a 911 coming up the road to Hartside Cafe...now sadly a shell...tail out on every bend. It was quite scary as he was taking up most of the road 😳

This thread makes me feel an old git too, I am thankful for learning my early driving on NZ gravel roads in vivas beetles and Morrie thous heaps of fun without 'danger of death' , cross ply tyres and low power followed by a good measure of two wheeled transport drives a certain respect for the conditions that I don't know how new drivers will gain without some of the courses or track days mentioned above. The current cars are so capable that by the time someone loses it the consequences are serious not just a ' hope mum doesn't notice that scratch'.

The older I get, the more careful and anxious I get when driving. Of course it's still fun, but there are several dangers in traffic that didn't exist in the past and I've experienced all variants before. I'm not saying that I'm free of mistakes but I mean driving from other drivers.

The inconspicuous drivers, often younger women, but who stare into her mobile phone. A few years ago, I almost had a serious frontal crash with the P4SS because a young woman had come quite imperceptibly to my side. I had to drive halfway into the ditch with an emergency stop and had only a few centimetres of space between her and a fence. She still had the mobile phone in her hand and most of all she hadn't even understood the situation and just looked stupid.

She very likely was, rather than just looking, stupid!

I agree 100% with MOG 615:

I had an S2 3.0L Roadster and felt the power was enough fo the live rear end. Now, with a 370 odd bhp Plus 8 the power to weight ratio is close to 345bhp/tonne, but it has a much more modern suspension and 245 profile tyres. I can get the back to move if I try, but on the road drive it well within its limits.

A track day at Castle Combe and a Hill Climb school at Gurston Down convinced me that I am not skilful enough to drive the car at its limits..which are very high. The track day was interesting, the big 6 pot AP Racing front brakes slow the car far, far more quickly than the trads, so I was braking later than almost everyone, other than the Caterham drivers.
Brake late and hard, slowish through the corners and then lots of power out seemed to be best for me.

Also 50 years on two wheels taught me a lot about reading the road and grip. Losing either or both ends on a bike has rather more consequences than in a car.

The car is tyre sensitive too, it came with Avon ZZ3, but now has Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S and since they went on last year I have failed to get more than a slight twitch when pulling out of a side turning rather spiritedly. My feeling is that 50% wear on the back is the limit.

I've said it before but I'll repeat it. I think everyone who drives four wheels of any kind should be required to have ridden two wheels for at least a year and be able to prove it.

I have also said this and stand by the concept.
