I would say if it is really autonomous driving it means everything, all functions of the car and all of the cars on the road as they interact. Then it is no longer an individual car but a gondola that you enter and exit again. Then all cars are like taxis but without a driver and without a steering wheel. And you don't develop any owner pride for that. You wouldn't want to buy something like that individually you just pay for the ride.

Automation comes in levels and step by step.

A couple of years ago noone believed in race cars without manual gearbox and what do we see now? +6 without...;)

level one and two are for assisted driving - this is where industry stands. The full responsibility is with the driver.

level 3 means within system specs the driver can hand over control to the car. Any take over stuation has to be relaxed. Responsibility switches to the system means the car company. For major problems the driver has to stay awake to carry on driving after the hand over.

level 4 means the driver is not needed for the task. In a parking Garage this means drivers can leave the car at the entrance. For a robo taxi it means there are restrictions to e.g one city. This taxi would not even need a steering wheel.

level 5 means complete automation on any road to any destination - that might still take a while;)

Sorry to bother you with text, but automated driving is part of my life for the past 15 years...
maybe because of that I love the manual eco and the morgan;)

If there are any questions, donˋt hestate to ask or to look me up on youtube

When fully autonomous cars become the norm every town and city will just grind to a halt.
Pedestrians (and cyclists but don't get me started on cyclists)will know that cars are programmed not to run them over so they can wander out into the road to cross or just walk along it with absolutely no negative effect to themselves just bringing all the vehicles to a halt.
Then add the oft discussed option of does the car kill the passengers or a pedestrian?
A narrow winding mountain road.
A person steps out
To avoid running over the pedestrian the car can only drive over the edge to the XXXm drop.
What does it do kill the pedestrian or the passengers?

I can see carjacking becoming very easy if criminals know they can stop a car just by stepping in front of it.

The flip side of that though is that they aren't going to be much good at ram raiding.

These, and countless other paradigms have been the subject of immense research over the last few years. There will always be fatal accidents, however, if the number (or other appropriate metric) of fatal accidents from autonomous cars falls well below that from non-autonomous cars, the moral case for autonomous cars will become very strong.
