Looking Good Moggo, I was sailing a cold Moulded 50' today in an Anzac Day regatta (built in 1905) no winches so can feel it in the arms tonight.

How about posting links to such stories. The nearest google could come up with was a story from 2002 about Lloyds Register of Shipping in which an RN spokesman's quoted as saying: "Lloyd's List is at liberty to do what they like, but the Navy intends to continue in a tradition that goes back centuries, if not millennia."

Telegraph story from 2002

Interesting.
Queen Elizabeth is named after a female but must be gender neutral. So It must replace She? Does the Queen object to naming a ship after her and refering to the ship as “she”?
HMS Iron Duke also gender neutral with a masculine name.
What do the crew of Iron Duke use? She? He? It?
As most RN ships seem to be named after places or have celebratory or fearsome names that are already gender neutral why not keep the tradition of “she” ?
PC is making a mockery of non offensive terminology that has lasted for centuries just to avoid attracting over zealous critics.

When the American invasion ship USS Ponce visited Pompey in the 80s with it's complement of 400 US Marines, I remember our skipper on HMS Woodlark warning the crew that Flag Officer Portsmouth had decreed that in view of the name, any punch ups with the US matelots or Marines would be deemed to have been started by RN personnel.

As to the whole question of a boat's gender, one of the panelists on the news quiz made a good point. Why stop at gender ? If a ship decides that it wants to be a train (say) who are we to stand in it's way ?
