Headlines this morning suggest pensioners perks such as free bus passes, TV licenses etc. should be abolished and the monies saved spent on the young.
This is a suggestion by a Peer group called the House of Lords. An outdated extravagantly expensive club which should itself be abolished and millions of £££££££’s made available for the young.

Just think twice, before you are against support for the youngsters
and don't mix daily allowances and heating support with allocations for the Young.
A pensioner had a whole lifetime to work for his wealth and to safe money for the last part of his life. A youngster needs education and upfront investment to get a proper job which should keep the industry running, creates investments like flats or housing, car, consumer goods and so on.
I made my best income at higher age while I needed money at my early days.
Now spending makes fun, but is not a necessity. My personal approach is to donate a solid fund of education, housing and transport to my children so they can begin their life without high debits. Lots of people can not (or don't want to) provide such service to their offsprings. In such cases general support by the system can be helpful and is a good investment for the future.

Means testing tends to be quite expensive to administer and can be humiliating to the recipients. I think a better idea is to make all of these these sort of benefits taxable. That way wealthy pensioners will pay a huge chunk of them back to the state.

Unfortunately Hannes not all pensioners are well off. Perhaps the pension system in Austria is more generous than in some other countries. Many pensioners are living below the poverty line and the removal of benefits after a lifetime of work will be a bitter blow to many.
As always the politicians change the "contract" in a unilateral way without agreement of the other party. Strangely the politicians own pensions and benefits are never reduced.

I would gladly give up the TV license etc if the government kept to the contract we had when my wife & I started work. even though we had low salaries we paid our NI. Now with the change of retirement age without compensation HM Gov have taken off us effectively 6 years for my wife 1 year for me making c £56k.
My old company pension is still set at 65 as the retirement age as per our contract so I lose part of the pension due to SERPS of c £1k as HM Gov should be paying that but aren't of course.
Surely the Lords should be using that £57k for the young or perhaps they pissed it away on Brexit planning.
