Current family Merc is now 10 years old and 110k miles. We really could do with changing it for something a bit more dog friendly ( ie a hatch / estate) but I have been reluctant to do so since it seems to me that we are in a period of change and that viable electric alternatives are becoming available. We do a reasonable annual mileage but journeys of over 150 miles are rare, so home charging is viable for us.
How do you see it? When do you think you will go all electric?

I am contemplating a 5KW set of solar panels with battery and charging point in advance of getting an EV and then when my wifes car needs replacing to shift her over to driving fully on our own generated power, which should work with daily mileage of circa 30-40 miles. The payback on the panels is obviously much shorter if you are generating electricity to replace petrol rather than just supplying your own electricity needs.
My logic in doing the panels, battery and charging point first is that at some point someone in government will realise how much revenue they stand to lose from fuel duty and will figure out a mechanism for taxing this and I would like to install a system before this happens.
Has anyone on TM been through a similar process ?

I have just the panels. I was delaying on the battery to see how my son gets on with his.
We have 2 fairly new Polos & do 3 & 6,000 miles pa each right now plus 5-8k in the Mog.
The Polos cost nothing to run so I'll wait for e cars to get cheaper & better range wise.

We have had 4 kwh of PV panels since November 2011, they generate between 3500 kwh and 3900 kwh per year.
I'm mulling over a battery pack, but again, the time isn't right. I have arranged to have an "ImmerSun" fitted", this takes any unused PV electricity and uses it to heat the hot water tank, saving gas, particularly in summer.
I've been thinking about an electric car, at the moment we have three petrol cars. But I strongly suspect that when the AMG A35 comes out of its contract in 2023 the replacement will be electric, by then charging infrastructure will be better and there will be more choice.

I don't plan on ever going electric. Too expensive to buy, and questionable green credentials on battery production and disposal.
But who knows?
