God dam fuel gauge, a dip stick would be more accurate.
Last year it wasn’t too bad, this year if I brim the tank it reads 84%, after 60 or so miles it’s down to zero where it stays.😡😡😡
Last week, 190 miles, 23 ltrs brim to brim.
Can’t fault the mpg though 😁😁😁😁

I could see a dipstick being fabricated and fashioned with a handle that would not allow it to fall into the tank.

The fuel gauge situation hasn`t got any better over the last few years, and I'm surprised.
Myself, i will be looking into fitting a sweep fuel gauge, without any tank mods, just not sure how to do it.
I would also like a fuel pressure gauge and some sort of battery gauge, volts or amps or both. just to eliminate two more possible causes of frustration when things don`t go as expected.
Any thoughts? John.

How does the in-tank fuel level sensor work? Is it a float? If so then installing a sweep style gauge should not be that difficult.
Voltage is much easier than Amps.

Voltage is much easier than Amps. It is a float inside a tube.

Thanks, a ohmmeter measuring resistance with the different float levels should tell you if it is a linear leading and if so I don’t see why you can’t put a sweep gauge on it. Unless the fuel reading is tied to the computer causing a condition to stop the car when the fuel gets to low. You could check that by removing the wire from the float, outside the fuel tank, and see how the machines operates with it disconnected. Don’t let the loose end short out on anything while you try it.

There is a matching VDO fuel gauge for the sender used in the M3W instructions here https://www.vdo-instruments.com/media/in...uel%20Gauge.pdf

Its a sweep gauge, not idiot lights that come in the Mini Coopers. And this sweep gauge is not reading properly? If it was calibrated as per instructions then I would suspect either sender or gauge to be faulty.
