I am in the process of getting my car restored and need to get all the paint striped from the wings and bonnet. I have done the main body by hand, but it took a lot of work. I in south Hertfordshire and are looking for someone to carry out the work. The wings are aluminium. Any recommendations?
Thanks

I believe it’s really difficult stripping ali

I asked a chemical stripping company on a stand at the NEC classic Car show who told me they can do steel but not Aluminium

I seem to remember it’s because of the chemicals needed, too environmentally damaging or dangerous a process to do it commercially

Can’t remember exactly the reasons. I think it was because it needed a strong acid

Because it will be unlikely to do commercially, you might have to research and do it yourself but I believe the chemicals and the by products are nasty

I believe an alkali is used, not acid. I would rather let some one do it who knows what there doing

Starchem Synstryp is a popular paint stripper used by the Land Rover community on aluminium panels. Even gets off original 60 year old LR paint eventually.

On older cars prior to the advent of the Superform wings, the wings came in 3 sections. The headlamp canticle , the Mudgard bit, and the flat section between the mudguard bit and the inner wing, these sections are welded together, then bodged with filler ( a substantial amount in parts) . If you get the front wings chemically stripped, you will also lose this filler which will have been profiled by a tradesman who does this day in day out - if your skills are as good - then not a problem.

I would try using professional stripper that you can buy from any automotive paint supplier.

If you are going ahead with dipping the wings and as previously stated, “it’s different chemicals for aluminium & steel”, I would do some research into how the aluminium stripper will react with the steel beading around the wing edges.
Cheers

Most removers are alkaline pH. Aluminum does not like bases, but is OK with acids. Steel is the opposite. So strippers intended for aluminum are going to be acid pH.
